i'm sure most if not all prices of watches will go north..

for omega, the current aqua terra chrono gmt co-axial is one good looker but the SS version already costs $11K+...for the same movement, planet ocean is so much cheaper...

Omega is not alone. It's the same trend for other brands as well. Inflation, higher cost of living and employment, higher cost of precious metals, high cost of raw materials, etc.

I won't be surprise if the cheapest Omega in 10 years time will be in excess of RM10k.

yeah i heard that Omega is consolidating all their sales point into their own boutiques to make it more up scale and to both challenge Rolex and maintain the "prestige" of the brand.

Until last year you could still get bargain deals from Mustafa over here. but now whats left over there are Rado, Tissot, Hamilton, Longines and etc.. the Omega booth disappeared.

the Omega boutiques have been opening up almost everywhere for the past couple of years in line with this strategy.

So unless you are a big AD with a nice address.. your Omega dealership would be pulled back soon.

whether this would work or not...has yet to be seen

As great as their watches maybe .. i always felt that they are the Nike of luxury watches... pays too much endorsement to sell. I can't help but feel i am paying for them to advertise if i buy one of their watches.

Their Railmaster looks enticing.

cheers

Omega is not alone in this. Rolex is the other one.

Come to think. If they dun advertise, less ppl know, less demand, less appealing, less resell value (or investment value taking Rolex as an example). Appeal comes as more ppl look at it after knowing the brand, more ppl talk about it, ponder and influence others. It could work the way if the watch is manifested and / or presented in bad taste.

sshark,
Good article. Thanks for sharing the link. So it seems that the Swatch Group practice of price control may actually contravene Australian laws. They've already found guilty of breaching competition law by the Danish Court.
Apparently the practice of price control by coercion is not so uncommon here in Malaysia. From conversations with ADs, not only Omega is guilty of this, but other big names also maintain the same practice. I wonder if Malaysia has any competition law to protect us poor consumers. Any lawyers here who would like to share their views?

Terrenceterrence,
Ha ha. I really like that term, "Nike of luxury watches".
Personally I think TAG probably deserves the honours more than Omega.
But on an absolute basis the brand with the highest advert budget is indusputably Rolex, based on the North American figures published in Watchtime magazine.

advertising is one thing..but the endorsement and product placement of Omega just turns me off....

everyone remember the scene in Casino Royale? man ...that's just so cheesy

like i siad ..i can't help feeling that i am paying george clooney...zhang ziyi...and the lots if i buy an Omega...

love the vintage Seamasters though..those are a beaut....

rolexes ...advertising cost is sky high because they choose the pages of major mags (last page... behing the cover) prominent billboards, prestige sports tourney to advertise.

boring as it might be...but it works.

cheers

LOL! Not sure really..maybe the brand and the "blink"?

Talk about this, i once read an member in another forum who suggested to wear rolex on the right hand so that when you meet someone and shake his/her hand, ppl can see you are wearing the "blink" and you can indirectly tell you wealthiness ;) I don't buy it but i think a lot ppl buy rolex for this reason (one of the rolex strategy is to achieve this, "successful = rolex" or something like that la)

I don't have much comment and will not disagree too ;) If one can pay the price and able to buy what he/she like and to show it to other, why not? kekeke..don't take it so serious ;)

Cheers!

Alice - As I have no intention to flip this time round, I would go for the evergreen constellation series, the model with the double claw / clasp on both side of the watch, white dial.

And given a choice between the FM and Omega, I would go for the Omegassss.....
Why...IMHO, FM is way superficial in term of value. where omega is more down to earth.

Chinese seem to prefer omega and Rolex... is because they are more Asian??... as compared to FM. Even the young children / Tom / Dick and Harry know what they are as compared to names that they find difficult to pronounce....

my 2 cts worth

I suppose Rolex and Omega hit the Asian shores early (around 60s or earlier) and had spend lots of in marketing worldwide. Advertising is very important. M$ would not be what it is today without extensive marketing. :)

Hi ! All

Kind of agree that Rolex & Omega in Asian Market is kind of big.
My bro do have a frens works for the watch company and he do mention that
well, in Asian market especially Malaysia , it seems if u pump in more budget into the Marketing
and Advertising , the brand will be up.
Besides that the brand awareness that they have created.
Still in loves with my Archimede

And the gallery in KLCC area was so nice..

Price sure increase every yr, the worker in Swiss n german need to increase their salary every yr, if they don't get it they will protest strongly! Like it or not, fair or not fair, I think Market will decide, as long as ppl willing to pAy n the brand can survive mean it's fair, vice versa

It's all about marketing. Once the market is bombarded with incessant advertisements and endorsements, the bias towards the brand will get into the consumer's head.

Maybe the watch industry did learn a thing or two from McD and Coca-Cola ;D
