For newbies ,collectors and anybody else..
« on: August 20, 2011, 03:46:45 PM »
Another time for sharing. I'd like to advise newbies to the watch collecting scene to always go for your grail watch/es .

To me there are a) grail watches b) semi-grail watches and c) everyday watches. Grail watches are watches which I dream of and will never sell. Semi-grail watches are watches which i wont sell unless to obtain a grail watch. Everyday watches are watches i own which could be sold at any give time to obtain either the grail or semi-grail. Throughout my life collecting watches, i have cycle through a fair share of watches before obtaining my grail. I tried substituting my grail with another watch but the feeling is not the same and thus many have come and gone. So if you buy your grail:
a) you will feel very satisfied and happy - this is self explanatory
b) you save money - Watches devalue over time except certain brands. I'd cycle through a fair share and each time i sold them, i lose money.
c) you wont find the urge to buy another watch soon(unless you got more than one grail watch)

This is through personal experience. So far 2/3 of my grail watches have been obtained. One upon graduation and the other upon consolidating my collection. I will leave the last for another time. Any other members can also share some of their advice so that junior watch collectors would not be so lost in the whole world of watch collecting.

May i add some too  ???

Firstly
Watches are not investment especially if you are buying those "small/unknown/not many people know" type of watch brand which will depreciate ALOT when you try to sell. Even if you bought lolex/lolmega/Bretiling etc chances of getting a high return is quite low compared to buying property. The most you can get is maybe 80% more or less your money back UNLESS you get the odd one like the one cheese had on his Tudor heritage chronograph.

In my opinion, watches (i meant those big name brand) are not investment but more to be "liquid" as in it will be easily (depending on brand tho) turn into cash when you  (are desperately) need cold hard cash.

I hate people generally told me watches is an "investment"  :HammerHead:

Secondly
When you buy watches, please consider about the maintenance cost. Depending who you gave the watch to be serviced, prices will be from around Rm800 to ten of thousand Ringgit.

As a rule of thumb, if the watch have more bell and whistle usually the service cost will be higher. Same goes to how old is the watch, the older the watch usually more expensive. The person/company who will handle your watch will also determine the price of the service, official service center usually the most expensive (they label it as "profit center") but it does not mean the tech folks there will know what are they doing (eg seiko service center  :HammerHead:). Some indie watch repairer will do better job at lower price but the problem is that they may not have access to parts but usually will not be the problem unless your skru up your watch badly.

It is an interesting point to think about it when you compared it to buying a Honda and Ferrari and counting the cost of owning it (like servicing, spare parts etc).  ::)

Thirdly
Get the watch you liked the most and try not to follow the crowd.

I had seen posted in this forum and other forum asking "What do you thing of watch A" and usually the person will end up buying if the replies were positive and end up ditching the plan to buy it if the replies were negative. Usually I would just reply the person "Buy  it if you liked it alot".

The reason I said this is because you are buying the watch to satisfy yourself aka "Shiok Sendiri" and not to buy and wear for the sake of pleasing other people.

When I first entered into the hobby, the first watch brand I saw is Panarai and I immediately stuck my eye onto it because it is "THE" watch to get because it is cool and you get the honour to be a "Paneristi". I was crazy for that particular watch (PAM 000) to the level of putting down my name in the waiting list at the AD in Pavilion (they havent call me yet lol  :HammerHead:) but the fever on it died down. Why?

I asked myself why I wanted to buy it? The reason because everybody else was wearing it but once i tried it on my wrist (tru one of the forumer) it does not look right on my wrist and somehow I don have the "feel" when wearing it. What is the point of buying it if I don't even have the "feel" or chemistry between the watch and me (sounded like I am going after girl to be my GF  :police:). Therefore, i decide not to go after it. No offence to Panerai lover ya

So buy whatever watch that satisfy you regardless of what other people think about it

Lastly
Enjoy the hobby and PLEASE don't judge people by what watch are they wearing like what those people in watchshop does :)

A person who may owned a few humble seiko vintage diver can be more WAY MORE PASSIONATE than a person who bought gazillion ringgit watch but do not know anything about it.

Enjoy the hobby and smile like the girl in my avatar... lol  :Laughing_on_floor:

Good advice, G.MAC, especially for newbies like me with limited budget.
But because of my limited budget, I'll have to go for a 'semi-grail' as my first serious collection :Blue:
I appreciate Gigi's point as I also believe that we should be happy and proud to be who we are, no matter what's on our wrist.
Take care, Ciao!

Advices from various members can used to reflect on other matters and vice versa. Don't live beyond your means. Specifically, don't buy a watch will make you inferior in front of others in your opinion. Buy the watch you can wear freely and happily. Same goes for car.

Bro,

Is it true some brand collection price would goes up in time? If that is so, it  could be considered as an investment right?

This is very rare. DO be careful if you consider watches as an investment. Be more prepared to make a loss as opposed to a profit. Watches are NOT a good form of investment. Very risky.

a grail need not be an expensive piece. It is just the watch which you really want from the beginning. How do you know which watch you really want is another discussion altogether. I was fortunate to know what i want and stick closely to it also despite the many potent poison from this forum :Laughing_on_floor:

Don't care about other's preference.

One's grail is another's daily watch.

I'm not watch salesperson - I don't judge you by what you wear.

So, in the nutshell, the finer things in life does not have to be the most expensive or exotic item or place one could have.

Ball is good from quality and price standpoint. But the previous older model were more "value for $" than current models. Nearly got myself a ball but din't in the end. But still it is a nice watch

I think otherwise, just different perspectives;

I understood how Gigi felt, sorry forgot yr real name, after some of us have gone through the cycle...

I was newbie before, and I did share this experience with DC. No matter how "Gang Ho" the advise is. It is better to let individual go through the mentality cycle;

1) Let them think watch is for investment, after a few round of burning
2) Let them have impulse buying, so some of us can acquire cheaper price in the 'Sale section"
3) Let them try different brand, so they will value more on the Grail

Simple rule, if you tell the kid not the play with fire, they will never understand. Let them try once, they will never argue with you...

Just my 16 cents of worth, my cents keep increasing... :Laughing_on_floor:

Buy car abit different experience for me.
I actually started with a Kelisa to Persona to Vios to Civic and now Sonata.
As it is common knowledge in Malaysia and the world for that matter, cars are bound to decline in value... 10% per year by normal estimates... faster if you drive a European make like Audi, Beemer, Merc...
Normally my cars would stay with me for at least 3 years before I change... and I only took 5 year loans for my cars...Now my style would not be suitable for those taking 7 year or 9 year loan...
A friend of mine took out a 9 year loan on his toyota... after driving it for 5 years, he sell the car and settle his bank loan and is left with peanuts that's not even enough for a downpayment on a new car... 2nd hand value? You only need to worry about that if you're taking a long car loan, which is risky if you ask me... The only thing that I would go for the maximum term loan is property... if I can afford to pay off a 3 year car loan, I would... but 5 years is more realistic for me...  ;)
For me, whenever the 3 years is up, I only have 2 years left on the bank loan, I even if I calculate that the value of my car loses 15% per year for 3 years and I sell it based on that estimate, I still have enough to pay off my loan and downpayment for a new car.
People who owned cars would know that we will never be satisfied... when we buy a car, we would say to ourselves, once I finish paying this car... sky clear liao... got car to drive with no monthly payments... who are we kidding? That's how I think when I finished paying my Kelisa.
Itchy butt go look at new cars liao...
Sorry for going off topic here...  ;D This is my own experience in car buying...
