Cold Storage

Just want to ask all here. If I want to keep a rolex dormant for say, 21 years without wearing it so it is always new for my kid ( in the way future), is it advisable? Would it be more detrimental to do this or should i plonk it on a watch winder? What are the consequences if i may ask?

keep it in storage in a controlled environment like a bank safety deposit box and then service it it before wearing... problem solved  :thumbsup:

:Laughing_on_floor: No la. It is just my personal opinion and staunch belief that if things were to be meant for someone as a gift, i will
want to keep it as new as possible. I dont feel 'nice' to give away a used item although in this case it is an expensive used item. So thats why i would like to keep it instead of wearing it. Its different if it were to be passed down via an inheritance. Also i believe rollies now dont use tritium for their lumes so no patina effect would appear on the dial to further boost its value ( if possible ). However, this is just my opinion and I dont mean any offense to anyone. Either way, the time to be a father is still a long way away for me so my opinions may change by then.

Best would be to use the watch and have it serviced and overhaul just before you give it away. You would have enjoyed the watch and will enjoy giving the watch, 'new' to your kids.

Agree, giving new to your kids is like buying a new watch during that time, why not wear it with extra careful and pass it on with yr sweat,dirt & smell, guess more meaningful  :Laughing_on_floor: :Laughing_on_floor:

i am curios G....either u r loving father....or a serious nut case W.I.S who wish he inherit a vintage rolex and try to live your dream with your son...either which...your son would love u nonetheless.....even if he dont live up to a W.I.S , he can always cash on it.....

siodee: buying a submariner later plus 21 years after that would be very very expensive. Maybe by then a sub would be around RM70k?
nazri: not a father yet. dont even have 'the other half' also yet. Just starting out in life hence I buy some watches from money saved before settling down later and the realities of life punching me in the face forcing me to put the hobby on hold. Just a thought to ponder when the time eventually comes. Am intrigued and like the idea of giving a watch to my newborn after learning about it from this site. Also a rolex is as good as gold what with the bi-annual price increase.

Anyway, the bottomline is whether it is possible to keep the watch there without running for so long? From all the feedbacks, I am guessing it is ok, just that it has to be serviced before it is worn. This is all for information sake, guys. I just like the idea and would love to carry it out but whether it is possible then or not is a different matter.

Wow G, don't you think you're starting abit too early??
I am married with 2 kids and I did think about passing down what I have to him later.
Maybe 1 definitive piece but I am still looking...
And in the meantime, I'm enjoying whatever I bought first... if there is one that I think will be a heirloom piece, I will still wear it and then when it's time, pass in to him.
But I would not like to pass a brand new one, I very much prefer to pass down a piece that I have worn and make history together.
In that way, I guess it will carry a more sentimental value to my kid later on.
He will look at d watch and say to himself "My Dad used to wear this watch everyday"
But if you were to pass a cold storage watch to him, the watch is in pristine condition and has no history of you ever wearing it... where's the value in that?
But since it's your money, you can do whatever that tickles your fancy though....  ;D

But i do agree with you that i'd buy it now before other commitments starts coming in one by one and then you want to buy also no heart hence the thread "how to save to buy watch"  :Laughing_on_floor:

GMac...why not think from your future son's perspective?

1.  my dad gave me a brand new watch.  he bought it 20 years ago, kept it in a safe and is now giving me.  wow!

2. my dad gave me his trusted Rolex.   The piece I always see him wearing when i was a child.  He loves it so much.  Its a part of him, his struggle, his achievements.
And now, as i enter into manhood, he is passing it to me.  A watch that represent all the toil, struggle and success of my father....whether i wear it or not, it will always remind me everything about my father...

not sure about you but i think i will prefer no 2.... i wish i have a piece (even if its an old Rado or Seiko...) from my dad/grand dad.  Thing is neither of them fancy watches.....But i'll make sure I do it...


edited....(ooops...i just read Hanz's comment....its saying the same thing... :Laughing_on_floor:)

Problem is I am not a one-watch-guy. So boy wont get to see daddy wear his watch often to remember it as daddy wears other watches. I hope he doesnt covet mine although i covet my senior's watches. :Laughing_on_floor: Either way, I am just toying with the idea. It may be executed differently when the time comes.
