Which one should i go for my first watch ? Rolex or Panerai
« on: April 13, 2014, 07:48:55 PM »
Hi guys, been thinking recently about getting my first watch. Got 2 option in my mind, which is a pre-owned Rolex Pepsi in mint condition with box and papers around RM16-17K or a brand new Panerai 000 which is around 16K, both are almost in a range of price but a very different watch, one is automatic and another one is manual winding. Personally, i think pepsi rolex's feeling is more towards fashion and style and it's well recognised brand, meanwhile the pam give the masculine and mature feeling. Ps: i only plan to buy 1 watch to keep for long time, no plan to sell in near future. What do you shifts think ?

So do you prefer well-recognised or masculine & mature?  New or used?

You said you would keep one watch for long time. Then, that one is no other than Rolex.

Get the pepsi home and drink it. Get any base Pam later or if you can get both now, and forget about the dlc thing it will come off overtime or when scratch.regards tony

Since you intend to keep this 1st purchase for a longgg time (Don't we all? But then another piece almost always pops up on the radar! :Laughing_on_floor:), I would say to go with the Rollie. The Pepsi is iconic, attracts attention, lets people know that you have taste (well, PAM too but maybe somewhat different market), could be flipped off relatively easily, and the first owner would have absorbed most of the depreciation. Sounds like a good proposition to me. Good luck with your decision!

If you are comfortable with a pre-owned, the Pepsi is a good choice. Seems like there are always people looking for this model. Is it the GMT II (16710) or the GMT (16700)?

I agree with most of the sifus here... Rolex first and then others.

However, I got my PAM 000 before my Rolex Explorer II. Then again the game will never ends, it starts with your very 1st one.
Casio G-Shock GPW-1000-1BJF; Seiko Monster SRP313J1; Seiko Astron SBXA033; Rolex Explorer II 216570; Defakto Eins - White; Panerai PAM 000M; Stowa Marine Original Serial; Tissot T-Touch Expert Titanium T013.420.47.202.00; IWC Fliegerchronograph 3717; Omega Seamaster 300M Chronometer 2220.80.00; Tag Heuer Professional 3000 Series Quartz

It really depends, like you I had this dilemma too. Now I have both the PAM 000 and (albeit) a GMT2c LN

I went the other route, bought the PAM used then bought the GMT new.

IMO the PAM is more versatile because you can change straps to give it a new and fresh look, also if you were to buy a new PAM 0 the first thing you would probably do is get an aftermarket strap. So if you are buying to use for different occasions and want a watch that can spot a different look on the fly go for the PAM.

The GMT on the other hand is a great watch, love it to bits. Although being a SS watch it's bound to have scratches, if you find a mint one it's probably been polished before. For Pepsi I would vote for vintage, maybe a 1675 unpolished would be best. If you are thinking of getting one watch and only one watch for the rest of your life ( ???) then... Rolex.

pix for poison!

Rolex without any doubt .... you can always pick up a PAM along the way if you wish to make further inroads to your watch collection journey

Since you are into GMT Pepsi, why not GMT Batman .... spend a little more buy new - you only live once, indulge yourself, pamper youself

Since this is your 1st watch, I would suggest you go for Pam coz it is brand new.   000 may be discontinued with Panerai new 8 day movement.  Grab it brand new when it is still available.   I believe it is easier to get rollie pepsi than 000.   I like my 000, it is a very cool watch and you won't go wrong with Panerai base models.

Besides the difference in movement, do take note that 1 is with date (and GMT function) and another 1 is super basic (not even a second hand). Function wise is a big big thing to be considered if it is your first and keep-for-long watch.

If you are comparing PAM 000 with Submariner, I will say Submariner.

But since comparing with GMT Pepsi, think that you should get PAM 000, but a pre-owned 1.

Brand new PAM 000 for me.
Used Pepsis are pretty common and can be bought at later stage.

I was in same situation...

If you're pretty sure its going to be one and only one, the Rolex Pepsi GMT will be my choice...its arguably the most iconic Rolex watch (of course you'll hear the same arguments from sub, sea-dweller, daytona and even DJ owners... ;D)

but if its a matter of which to get first, then i agree with the earlier posts.  The Pepsi is not that difficult to find.  IF you can find a zero with a decent price, its a wonderful piece.

all the best, and do tell us the outcome.

oh yes, supposed to make it easier for you to choose...
