Lucky guy, your son.
My vote goes to the GMT. Classic design and love the cyclops.
-
Dad, I don't mind any of those ;D
-
LV- Limited Version. Official color of Rolex.
-
Definitely the BATMAN.
-
Pardon me, these are not high end watches ??
-
Pardon me, these are not high end watches ??
My apologize if my comment above has caused misunderstood. I meant those complicated and super high priced time piece.
At least this is within the price range i can afford, as of now. :)
-
Between the 3 I'd Get your boy a 16610lv instead. Father can wear now first..

i have 16610LV already. for myself, i am searching for good condition 16710 pepsi or 16660 sea dweller ;)
I can pass down to him together with other watches if he want. LOL
Now just to get 1 to safe keep till he is 18. Actually planning to get it when he was born. But i opt to get for his mum first. ;D
-
vote for Rolex 116710BLNR ! !
-
All those are too common, not special at all. If you have an old watch which is yours, give him that, much more meaningful. Otherwise at least buy him classy vintage Rolex instead of these modern gaudy baubles
-
A lot can change by the time he's 18 so it really should depend on what you can envision him proudly wearing when he eventually reaches that age. I think your son is so lucky to have a dad as generous as you.
That being said, if he's going to grow up to be a big lad, the sea dweller might be a better fit. If he's a little more expressive the batman would be spot on. Maybe he loves the simplicity of the submariner bezel? Too many factors at this moment.
My 2 shillings worth

Just need an iconic model which worth to keep till 18 years later. I still have other watches can pass down to him.
Just thinking of getting him a watch, let him start his own journey.
As for the vintage, by the time he grow up, my watches will become vintage already. ;D

If he don't like, i can wear. LOL

i would vote for 116610LV the HULK...
-
It is hard to guess his taste when he reaches 18.
To be save, you may wanna avoid the Hulk. Black is neutral but green, hmmm if you really go for it, make sure you bring him up to like green. :Laughing_on_floor:
-
Well my vote goes to GMT Batman .... for bad boys
-
my vote goes to Rolex 116710LN
-
To each his own..never found the hulk appealing. But I'm sure so many hulk advocates would say otherwise
-
IMO Rolex 116610LN / LV carry a lot of meaningful weight to next generation, Evergreen it's something that retains the spirits throughout his path of growth
-
The result:
116710BLNR - 6
116710 LN - 2
116610 LV - 6
116610 LN - 3
So, its either 116710 BLNR or 116610 LV. Gonna let his mother to choose between these 2.
-
batman....just so that my hulk will be a little bit more rare in the market 16 yrs later :P
-
116710BLNR for my vote to break the tiebreaker :P
-
116710BLNR...
-
LV the hulk for me too, the green is absolute different feeling when wearing it on hand, and not forget their iconic color too
-
BLNR gets my vote
-
Hulk for me!
-
Batman
-
what is the MSRP for batman?
-
I will vote for green hulk
-
Batman vs Hulk!
My wife choose Batman as well. But she asked: "can i wear first?" LOL
Hunting for Batman now. Thanks for all the feedback, appreciated!
-
No stock in most of AD. gonna search oversea now...
-
 good choice
-
Why not give him one of your watches? That would be surely much more meaningful than a mere mass produced commodity item like a new Rolex?
-
Yeah, I also think it would make more sense to give him one of your timepieces, rather than a 16-year old NOS Rolex. Personally, I'd prefer to have received a watch that had spent a lot of time with my father, rather than an "old" watch that has no history.
Also, a lot can happen in 16 years. Maybe in the future, people don't wear mechanical wristwatches anymore.
-
Mechanical timepieces will forever be worn by people....
During the quartz revolution, many people said that it was the end of mechanical timepieces. But look at the world now, or nearer in this forum, most if not all the watches posted here are mechanical watches.
-
Think silverstan has in mind a Rolex so let's give him that support :)
So many 'maybes' and 'what ifs' to even debate. Another pandora's box waiting to happen.
-

My point of view, mechanical is still mechanical, no matter how advance the technology will be. I don't think it will happen in 16 years that no one going to wear mechanical watch anymore.
I have 1 can pass down in my mind, which is my 5054R. But that just not suitable for kid. That's why plan to get 1 and keep for him. By his 18, give him as birthday present, it's still from my collection anyway, but with unworn condition only. ;D
-
If you are looking to pass on an icon of a watch, then I guess a classic styled 2015 SubC works...kind of :-\
However, if you with the watch to be heavier on the Iconic and a decent investment to boot, then you should consider maybe a mint non-ceramic example from a few years back ie. one that is beginning to show an appreciation in price right now.
My opinion...True icons need a little exclusivity, therefore buy him something that is much sought after right now...in 20 years time you then hand over not only an icon, but an ever appreciating investment. For the price range you are looking at, maybe a mint late 80's Daytona 16520 - already appreciating nicely and a very nice inheritance 15 - 20 years hence.
Cheers
Nobby

Very well said sir
-
Rolex 116710LN
GMT for me ;D
-
1 watch that means alot to you and passing down from generation sounds cool. love the sentimental thought of it there.
Lucky son...are you still adopting?
-
U better que.. I'm in line ;D
-
while in search of batman, i was offered a pepsi, 1675. no box no paper. But it's a reputable seller got it from a collector.
Should i accept the offer?

Since it will be handed down to your son, better get a brand new piece from AD .....

i love vintages. And they don't come better than the 1675
But do consider these options
1. you son will grow up to become a WIS , and specifically, vintage pieces. Then this will be a wonderful choice
2. Your son will become a WIS, but he wants something he can wear and enjoy, without much worry. The 1675 will require service and proper replacement of parts. You might not want to hand in down this burden
3. You son will not become a WIS but would appreciate that his dad gave him a nice Rolex. So, modern Rolex is the best bet here.
If you want something that that can be worn worry free for many years and yet still maintain that classy feel, maybe a 16710 Pepsi?
All the best.

Sorry didn't make it clear.
This is for myself. Not for my kid. will get batman for him.
Checked the serial, should be manufactured at year 1978. It's same age as me. Always wanted to look for a watch from year 1978.
then no need to think lor...Pull the trigger now! ;D ;D
-
One thing with the newer GMTs that won my heart is the font and the ceramic bezel..makes the older fonts look a tad bit 'weak'

No box, no paper would be a deal breaker for me. Not so much to support the authenticity but for completeness as a collectable, and particularly for a year that's personally significant to you.
As for your kid, pick the one Rolex that you like, NOT that I think a Rolex would - "Whoa! Thank's dad! How did you ever guess I've always wanted a NOS Rolex?! - on his 18th birthday.
-
Born in 1978 and u can afford to have Rolexes.. I'm amazed.
-

lots of young capable chaps around, that's why its always fun browsing wrist shots in MWF ;D
-
whats wrong with 1978? not like this is the year 1998.
36yrs old, plenty of time to save up rm20k over working so many years.
-
well, i raise up from a poor family, during my childhood, my mum work so hard to give the best to me. A seiko for my graduation is already very expensive watch for me. I told myself i need to give my family the best i can. I take every moment in my life a precise lesson and I work hard to achieve my goal. I always set a target for myself.
36 years old is consider old already.. hahaha. ;D
-
And you should be proud of your accomplishments and humble upbringing sir! Kudos to that :)
-
Back to the watch..erm, no box no paper = red flag to me. You don't want to end up trying to justify your watch later in time when you're letting it go ..
-

That's true. Should hunt for a better one. At least, with box and paper.
Thanks for all the input guys. Appreciated.
-
A 1675 with box and paper won't come cheap. A 16710, yes, you will bump into one occasionally.
If you can bring yourself to pay the extra money for a full set, then wait, scout around. But not easy to find locally.
There are seller overseas that offer full set. But with the crazy exchange rate, be prepared for at least RM 22k (if i remember the price correctly)
Also, more importantly, the dial, the end links, bezel.. whether it matches the period,, blah blah blah. Vintage is a minefield..
-
I have a friend who collect vintage rolexes. When come to vintage rolex, always discuss with him.
-
No boxes and papers isn't a big deal on a watch to be written and enjoyed, especially a watch that old. Very few full sets from the 60s remain. But it's critical to knew exactly what you are buying with vintage. E.g. original crown, hands, even dial? Or replaced? Case had been polished? Etc, etc
-
on the topic of steel or ceramic bezel.
whats your kid's temperament? if he is more of an active person, you should just go for the ceramic verses the easily scratched steel bezel.
never the less, i vote for the green hulk! keep the pepsi dial for yourself :Dancing_banana:

all the best..you will love the GMT pepsi.....my 16750 says hi... ;D

Nothing is wrong with 1978. Based on my judgement, 36 year old is the year where most men are about to reach year of stability in life. Buying houses, bits of investment, money on the kids education and lots of other commitment too. Not to forget preparing for early retirement for some. Most age of luxury started between 40s and above.
It means, our friend silverstan has reach a certain degree of success and from the story he told, it is something motivating. So, do not get me wrong.
Kenji1903 - yep, lot of financially capable young chap nowadays. I can only afford an orient at that age of silverstan.
Alexngbk, i CONCUR to that. But our friend here already using the HULK.
-
It is an old 50th anniversary LV, not hulk. how i wish i have hulk with me. ;D
I do envy achiever, so i told myself to be an achiever as well.
Life's short, do what can make you happy in a right way.
-
My mistake.. Yes, u have the LV. Hulk is coming ????
Right on bro!

So, Batman won? ;D
-
Might be risky, rolex may not be his thing. If its for sentiment value maybe the watch you're wearing now.
-
I'm agreeing to skareb on this. My dad once gave me a replica. I know that's all he can afford. But I appreciate that watch more than the rest. Dad's is the best.
-

What counts and is most important is the sentimentality of the watch.

Yea, hunting for one now. ;D

Batman, Pepsi, Hulk...I despair ::)
Terms that take the edge off what little class the watch has left.
-
Hmmmm...
Wearing my 03.2430.3000 today after almost a month of wearing 26470ST.00.A801CR.01 since getting it the end of last year.
Was glad that I was able to see it's cousin the 26470ST.00.A101CR.01 in the flesh.
Another member also bought the awesome 15707CE.00.A002CA.01.... That was an eye opener.
Not to mention Mikey's 5000-1110-B52A... Don't see those too often.
Still hoping I would be able to afford the 116719BLRO in the near future.
Just afraid that I might give it to my dad which is currently wearing the 116710BLNR which he seemed pretty content with after upgrading from 116710LN last year.
;)

I need to google every model mentioned in hanz079's post. LOL
Rolex model number are easily to identify, but AP, the model number just too long.

Wow deciphering the code is quite educational.. We should use code.

So, Batman won? ;D
Yea, hunting for one now. ;D
as i was making payment for my new acquisition at Rolex pavilion yesterday, 2 armed guards and 2 delivery men rolled in few big boxes from the entrance to the storeroom/vault. i am assuming those are new stocks which has just arrived. you can try your luck there if there isn't any waiting list for batman already
-
Wow! You're one very patient guy with superb advance planning. If I were your son, I'd take any of the NOS Rolex... that my Dad bought for me 16 yrs ago with so much love. In fact, I'd settle for any watches from my Dad (preferably mechanical ones).
Suddenly a weird thought came to me... what if Rolex goes bankrupt within 16 yrs time? Unthinkable for now but... forget it, it's not for this thread. :HammerHead:

I believe the watch that i keep for him now, will be more meaningful than i buy later at his 18. ;D
At least, there's a story behind this watch.

Late update for this: Finally got the 116710BLNR for him. Been busy since last I replied here and forgot to check for stock availability. Result? Bought it with more expensive price .... Sigh...
And also got myself a pre-owned Rolex Explorer 36mm version.
Most probably will on my wife's wrist more. ;D

Received the pre-owned 114270 Explorer. Overall in very good condition.
According to the last owner, this watch stay in the safety box instead on the wrist.
The original purchase date is same as my wife's birthday (day & month only, not year ;D ).

Tough to say in 18 years which one if these will be a truly iconic watch.
As on today I would say the Hulk followed by the batman.
-
Congrats on both the BLNR and Explorer, stan. Did you get the Batman via AD or grey? AD prices are all at a premium :(

16610LV this is the first version, so ppl called LV, 116610LV is this new version, and ppl called it Hulk, correct me if I am wrong.
-
LV actually stands for Lunette Verde (green bezel). LN is Lunette Noir (black bezel). 16610LV is also known as Kermit, whilst the 116610LV is known as Hulk. BLNR is Bleu/Noir (blue/black).
