Might be risky, rolex may not be his thing. If its for sentiment value maybe the watch you're wearing now.

I'm agreeing to skareb on this. My dad once gave me a replica. I know that's all he can afford. But I appreciate that watch more than the rest. Dad's is the best.

What counts and is most important is the sentimentality of the watch.

Batman, Pepsi, Hulk...I despair  ::)

Terms that take the edge off what little class the watch has left.

Hmmmm...
Wearing my 03.2430.3000 today after almost a month of wearing 26470ST.00.A801CR.01 since getting it the end of last year.
Was glad that I was able to see it's cousin the 26470ST.00.A101CR.01 in the flesh.
Another member also bought the awesome 15707CE.00.A002CA.01.... That was an eye opener.
Not to mention Mikey's 5000-1110-B52A... Don't see those too often.
Still hoping I would be able to afford the 116719BLRO in the near future.
Just afraid that I might give it to my dad which is currently wearing the 116710BLNR which he seemed pretty content with after upgrading from 116710LN last year.

 ;)

Wow! You're one very patient guy with superb advance planning. If I were your son, I'd take any of the NOS Rolex... that my Dad bought for me 16 yrs ago with so much love. In fact, I'd settle for any watches from my Dad (preferably mechanical ones).

Suddenly a weird thought came to me... what if Rolex goes bankrupt within 16 yrs time? Unthinkable for now but... forget it, it's not for this thread.  :HammerHead:

I believe the watch that i keep for him now, will be more meaningful than i buy later at his 18.  ;D
At least, there's a story behind this watch.

Late update for this: Finally got the 116710BLNR for him. Been busy since last I replied here and forgot to check for stock availability. Result? Bought it with more expensive price .... Sigh...

And also got myself a pre-owned Rolex Explorer 36mm version.
Most probably will on my wife's wrist more.  ;D

Received the pre-owned 114270 Explorer. Overall in very good condition.
According to the last owner, this watch stay in the safety box instead on the wrist.
The original purchase date is same as my wife's birthday (day & month only, not year  ;D ).

Tough to say in 18 years which one if these will be a truly iconic watch.

As on today I would say the Hulk followed by the batman.
