Hi guys,

I'm Asher from Penang. I'm quite new to watches, so please forgive me if some of my questions may seem plainly stupid. I have recently purchased my first automatic watch which is a Seiko 5 and I have been considering changing out the metal bracelet for a leather strap instead as I actually prefer the look and feel of leather straps. However I have some concerns about leather straps as most of them come with a tang buckle. It has happened to me before when taking off a watch with a leather strap that it slipped from my wrist and went crashing into the ground. After doing my own little research on the internet, I realised that it's difficult to find reasonably priced leather straps with deployment clasp for an approximately RM300 Seiko 5. However I know too that deployment clasps can be bought individually. So here are my questions,

1. How is the deployant clasp fitted on?
2. What kind of leather strap should one get? Is it just normal ones or do they have to be specially made for deployant clasps?
3. How does the deployant clasp on leather straps work?
4. Does Seiko by any chance have any leather straps and deployant clasps for their Seiko 5 line?
5. Is it possible to use the deployant clasp of the metal bracelet on a leather strap?

Thank you for your time.

1. Many types, so can't answer u
2. Depend on the type of deployment clasp
3. Can't understand ur question?
4. No, but the brights, premier line ... Hv deployment, as long as lug size same, then u can use it
5. Yes, if u have a strap custom make for it, normal leather strap on pin buckle surely can't

"Deployant" is a French word, while "deployment" is an English word.

I stand corrected.......

just googled ...

Deployant Clasp:
a clasp mechanism for use with watch straps. This allows a leather or other watch strap to operate similar to a watch bracelet. This gives a nicer, more finished appearance than the traditional tang-type buckle on most straps. Sometimes mistakenly called a 'deployment' clasp.

Deployment = to stand ready for battle...as in the deployment of an army.
Deployant = word used in the Horlogerie world for the folding clasp mechanism.

The main issue here is that , with the tang buckle...while removing, one may accidentally slipped and the watch crashed onto hard concrete.

Having said that, I always remove my watch strap with my wrist held firmly against my body. And that deployment clasp gives some 'uncomfortable' wear, IMHO....

Seiko 5 are great watches.......

I am almost a recovered watchaholic, but last checked shows only 70% recovered. How?

Haha, thanks for the info guys! That clears some air I guess that it is actually called a deployant clasp not a deployment clasp.

Thanks for answering. Oh, what I meant by question 3 was that how is the length of the leather strap adjusted after the deployant clasp is fitted on? Do you have to cut the leather strap or what? :)

By the way, regarding Seiko 5, I noticed online that there seems to be an emphasis on Japan Made Seiko 5 and just Seiko 5, especially those retail sites. What's the difference actually? I actually initially thought that all Seiko 5 were made in Japan.

i put a hirsch deployant on my leather strap.
brands like hirsch have typical S / M / L / XL lengths for the straps, so its possible to have the buckle end rest in the center of your wrist.
so when the time comes for a deployant, it'll also be pretty centered and more likely comfortable.

Hate tang buckles

Deployant claps are the way to go !

Though if the mechanism is faulty on the deployant clasp best of luck getting a replacement one as the AD's charge a premium for any parts !

Thank you for your time.

1. Basically just like how your tang buckle is fitted on. You adjust the length the same way
2. Normal straps can work.
3. It works great. The leather doesn't wear out so quickly as compare to tang. And it dont easily slip off from your hand like a tang.
4. Seiko has their own deployant for some watches. They may not be specifically for seiko 5 but if it fits....it can be done. Try calling Thong Sia see what they can find for you.
5. No!. Impossible

Your biggest problem is price. A new leather strap plus deployant may well cost the same or more than your current watch. You can find plenty of after-market stuff, just google.

One more thing is some deployant will dig into your wrist bone for some people. Try turning it the other way could work. The most comfortable ones are the so-called butterfly clasp that opens both sides.

Good luck hunting :)

Thanks guys for all the info.

Yeah, I think it's ridiculous to spend on a strap that might easily cost as much as the watch. Haha, maybe I might just stick to the metal bracelet or just compromise a little and get 'non-branded' straps. :-\

Oh I missed this....

Deployant a French word for the watch strap folding clasp
But not appear in dictionary, only watch close group is using it

Deployment an English word
If you put it together with clasp or buckle
widely use... Especially in commercial site
Just google deployment clasp... Google image, commercial website, watch related forum discussion... All popping up

So if u use deployant... U must be in the close group
If u use deployment, doesn't mean u r not within the close group...
U can b just me... iPhone predictive text key in help me type the word all the time

Hi guys,

I am looking for a deployant clasp for my Zenith watch.
Can I just check what are the preferred brands out there and do you mind to PM me if you know any shops in KL that sell deployant clasp at a reasonable price.

Thanks. :)
