kobold...haha.
not a bad idea...

this is what the watchsnob says about kobold.

Quote
Do you remember my essay about how mid-tier watch brands are duping people into thinking they’re getting something real when they’re really peddling smoke and mirrors? Well, I hope there is a special corner of horological hell reserved for Kobold because they’re doing the same thing but selling it for a lot more. The whole oversized “tool”-watch craze has never made sense to me, but Kobold watches take it to an entirely new level. Its website is littered with melodramatic rubbish about “special forces” and “tactical operations,” yet the only people I see wearing the watches are television actors. I am waiting to hear how a stock ETA movement buried deep inside a 15mm steel case is worth $5,000. Every new Kobold watch gives legions of sofa-dwelling oafs an erection, as they escape the honey-do lists and live out their fantasies driving their minivans to shoot paintball guns at each other. I’m starting to think “tool watch” is in reference to the owner and not the watch.

Watch snob needs to go out a bit more often and read what kobold is doing. They are not prefect, but they are not that bad as well.

In my view, the Watchsnob on Askmen.com is what his name implies 'A Snob'.
Its best to take his advice with a Big pinch of salt.

The Kobold is way overpriced for what it is.  I really could not find a reason as to why anyone would consider it when a more established Swiss or even German piece could be had at around the same price or even less.

It just shows the power of (or rather the lack of) advertising. it's a brand that that is not common in Malaysia, is not widely distributed here (if at all) and has little advertising in magazines sold here.

The biggest American watch company is Bulova.

It was bought up by Citizen in 2008, making it part of one of the biggest watch companies in the world. If it's Wikipedia page and website is to be believed, has tech innovations that rivals any of the major watch brands that we like to talk about here.

It's accutron electric tuning fork movement was a rival to the ubiquitous quartz movement, reputedly just as accurate but lost to quartz due to price issues.

Check out it's Wikipedia page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bulova

Google the website, interesting models.

If you are going for Bulova, why not go all the way for the Grand Complication. Surprisingly affordable, and you might have better luck in the state to come across one. And yes, as the name suggest, it is a watch with chronograph, perpetual calender & minute repeater. It chime beautifully.

flying USA next month, long travel and wondering which brand of watches should i bring home..
U guys can provide some suggestion?..

I was providing a suggestion to the original thread starter.
This thread is about suggestions for watches that can be bought while the OP is in the States. No point to go all the way there and buy a Swatch that is the same as the ones you can get in Malaysia IMHO.

Kobold is a "kacang puteh" small time brand with lots of advertising in watch magazines. It may be trendy but it's an extremely minor player. I really doubt that it can do a "Panerai" and break out of it's niche. On the other hand, Bulova is very much a major (one of the few left) American brand.
 :Laughing_on_floor:

If you want to talk about Kobold exclusively - you can start a new thread but IMO there is not much to say here in Malaysia. It has no presence.

Another watch brand that first started in America (now owned by a Dutch company) is Timex. Although there is not much talk here since they specialize in cheap workaday quartz watches it seems.

Personal opinion:
Go to States, look at American watches. If you want to buy a second hand Rolex or Omega; stay home and get better deals. Unless you want to go to Las Vegas and buy a watch from the pawn shop featured in "Pawn Stars."

If you are into collecting vintage timepieces, I believe it will be a good opportunity and certainly worthwhile to pick up a good condition Ball, Waltham, Elgin or Illinois railroad grade pocket watch. These are real beauties. Most of these companies also produced wrist watches, so do not forget to check these out too. The railroad grade pocket watches come with some really great looking movements!!  These are not commonly available (and certainly not cheap!!) timepieces, so I guess you'll have to plan ahead a little (like doing some net search for shops around the places you'll be visiting prior to your travel).

However, if you are into modern watches, I tend to believe you'll find Hong Kong, Singapore, Shanghai more interesting. America is not really a "watch country".

I probably misunderstood your post as a reply to my earlier post saying that Kobold is not worth the money. My bad. I actually agree with your opinions.

It is quartz. (read: budget firendly). If I'm not mistaken, one should cost about the price of a new Seiko Monster.
