Another 'Help me Decide Which Watch to Buy' Thread
« on: June 05, 2013, 01:59:02 AM »
Hi,

I'm in the market for a watch.  I don't wear one at the moment.  The last watch I bought was for my wife a couple of months ago (Omega Constellation mother of pearl dial with diamonds).  The last watch I bought for myself was a RM400 Seiko chrono 7 years ago.  I've been looking and reading these past few weeks, and I have shortlisted the following watches:

1.  Panerai Luminor Marina 1950 3 days Titanio PAM00351
2.  Omega Aqua Terra 150m GMT
3.  Rolex Daytona 116520W SS
4.  JLC Master Compressor GMT

The first consideration is price,  I don't think I'm willing to pay more than this for a watch (I believe these watches are within the same price bracket - well maybe the Rolex is a tad more).  I'm not a WIS but I do appreciate movement, complications, craftmanship, different/rarity etc.

I haven't checked availability or tried any of these on yet.  I will do this in the next few weeks.  I did however tried on a PAM00338 and PAM00393 at the OP boutique in Dubai last week. I like the look of the 338 on my 7.5in wrist.

So, out of these 4 which would you recommend?  Or are there any other watches that I should be looking at?

Thanks

Looking at the watches you listed, ur budget should top out at abt RM 30K, altho the Omega AT is in the under 20K region.
For that amount you have a lot of choices but u need to decide whether you want a formal dress, casual, sporty case. Then you have diver or flieger theme. Complications like date/day-date,triple date, MP,PR, chronograph, GMT, etc. Case material like gold, SS,titanium, ceramic (forged carbon is out of the budget).

For a budget of RM 30K I wouldn't rush and would consider a lot more options in brands besides the obvious Rolex, JLC, Omega such as Glashutte Original, IWC, Blancpain, AP (pre-owned),etc.. If you can accept the conservative style of Grand Seiko, that too is an excellent option.

If you review MWF threads such as watch gallery, watch review and What watch is on your wrist, it should give you a very good idea.

Thanks JOS, I will take my 'time' ( ;)) with this purchase.  I like the new IWC Ingenieur AMG brown version but it's 46mm....too big.

Thanks to the guys who recommended Daytona.  I do love it but I don't fancy the SS bracelet.  Would it look OK if I swap the bracelet with a leather strap?

I guess you need an end link with the leather strap to look better, maybe a nato.

speaking of nato, I can't recall seeing Daytona owner wearing on nato.

Daytona owners will chime in.

  for Daytona and GO.

Can consider getting the 2 tone 116523 and match with brown leather strap?

Happy hunting!

If you have a 7.5" wrist and you do decide on a Daytona, get a white dial because the black will look really small on that huge wrist. Can't say much about the other models as I have little experience with them.

If you have around rm 30k to spend , it must be a new or preowned Daytona ss which you could wear with any attire . And if you have  less than rm 20k , it must be a pre-loved JLC  MC GMT. For our climate a steel bracelet  or rubber would have been better, and its not cheap replacing an ori leather strap. regards tony
