New watch vs pre-owned watch
« on: April 20, 2013, 08:58:30 PM »
Hi,

Just a quick survey for fun.
How do you guys like the pre-owned watches?

Do you buy pre-owned because it is out of production, or because of its lower prices?
If you strictly stick to new purchases, was it because of bad experience, too troublesome to scout for good pre-owned, or I simply don't buy used stuff?

Personally, I have yet to buy any pre-owned watches but I will start soon.
The discount to new watches are simply too attractive (and also, some of the nicer models are nwo out of production)

I am open to both new and pre-loved. Other than vintages, I look for pre-loved watches in mint condition. Price can be very attractive.

Either way is fine with me.
Discontinued models = have to be pre owned since can't find brand new or NOS.
Newer models = depending on how bad I want the watch, could be new or pre owned.

I start to buy pre-owned. Cheaper and more value for money, but have to wait certain model to come on market. The only thing that I wonder is , how secure are we buying pre owned watches?

I listen to these 2 oft-cited advices:

1) Buy the seller
2) If it's too good to be true, it probably is

Sometimes I do a search on the seller to see any previous feedbacks or experiences from other buyers.

Finding a value buy is half the fun!

Agreed. I think the pre-owned watch market is in a way, illiquid  :)

Yea, some preowned selling the same price or higher when bought.. One good example is the Omega Seamaster, some seller asking almost the price of the current model not knowing the current models using a different calibre.. No doubt, some preowned appreciate over time,it all depends on demands as well.
I sold a 2 weeks old Tudor Tiger chrono for rm5k 3years back and today the same watch is selling at....

A friend of mine likes buying pre owned

But for me till now i haven't bought any preowned prhaps i have not seen any preowned that is worth the money for me. When i saw one usually the price of the preowned is not much different from the new.

Unless the pre owned is less than 50 percent of the new then i might consider.

I have seen amateur selling pre-loved, just rm2-3k below the purchased price on current production (popular make and model).

Whereas, a pre-loved rollie (non sport) sell at less rm5k from the purchased price.

Please correct me if I am wrong.........

How many actually sell the used Rolex watches at the prices they ask for anyway? Those who are firm usually never sell it.

I have never bought a pre-owned but I am open to the idea.

However, one thing that really scare me is paying for a high priced replica.

I went to shop in Subang Jaya and asked for a Rolex Lady DateJust, unfortunately it does not come with docs. Aiya.... the watch looks nice but me feel to risky.

All typical judgement aside about how people keep important docs, but I still have my ori docs (since 1997) for my Rolex 16233 and furthermore I've just serviced it, the RSC do furnish a small international service guarantee card stating the model# & SN#.

Having that small card do help in giving some form of confidence of what I'm about to buy. In the meantime, still looking...

Peace

Bought mostly new - only 2 pre-owned in the collection. Both out of production models.

I prefer mine to be new...
