Junghans or Omega?
« on: April 13, 2013, 10:42:11 AM »
Hi all,

I recently saw a Junghans Meister Chronoscope (see image) and was smitten by it. But the pricing of the watch is in the same range as a pre-owned Omega Seamaster chrono quartz (which I am also in love with).

So my question is this - Omega is a brand that I know of, but I've only just found out about Junghans that day. And especially since the Junghans is only running on a stock ETA movement (so I was told), is it worth the money?

Any advice would be appreciated. TQ!!

that junghans has german day wheel...
how much is the junghans anyway? since you mention that omega, i assume around rm4k?
imo, its kinda pricey...then again i do have an oris  :Laughing_on_floor:

but of cos, end of the day, its what feels more comfortable on your wrist.
the junghans looks like its going to wear pretty big.

The Junghan's more like double what you quoted.

A pre-owned Seamaster CHRONO would be about that range too, though a non-chrono quartz would be roughly what you quoted - at least that's what I found.

I think there is some confusion here.
first what is the omega smp chrono quartz you are comparing with? cos I dont recall seeing one before in recent times.
and around rm8k pre-owned, sure I have seen omega bond smp chronos, but all auto.
and yes, the non-chrono quartz are of cos around rm3-4k pre-owned.

So I'm assuming based on your initial response that the Junghans is too much money for what it is? :)

well, i'm sure you already know that omega is based on a 7750...tho that pic is an older model discontinued i think around 4-5yrs already, so i'm assuming it's pre-owned price should be around rm6k?
so bottom line again is which one you feel more comfortable wearing...i would choose the omega :P

Haha! I like both because they're 2 different styles.

But I feel like I have more cause to pay the money for the Omega. So yea, it will sit more comfortably on my wrist because of that.  :P

Safe to say I'm biased too, hence why the difficulty in justifying the non-Omega purchase.

Of, and apparently the Junghans is based on the 7750 too.

And I think if I do get it, I'll get this one - the Max Bill Chronoscope:

:) just pass by and saw this Junghans thread ...

let me introduce Junghans a bit....
They are from Schramberg part of Germany, started as clock maker and then start to produce wrist watches.
Their production never cease down during WWI or WWII. They also once the largest chronometer producer from German and 3rd largest (after Rolex and Omega)in world during 1950's. Today, their watches are still assemble at their own original facility and they are not owned by Swatch,Richemont,LVMH.
They also have a higher range called the Erhard Junghans which are equipped with calibre used by GS or Credor.

The first Junghans you posted is actually from their Meister collection which is the reintroduction of their 1930's design.
Where as the max bill are designed by the famous Bauhaus architect during 1960's.
The seamaster would be more like a tool/sport watch whereas the Junghans Meister/Maxbill Chrono are more formal watches... ;D

I have owned  the Seamaster Chronodiver Auto (though slightly newer version with red seamaster text) for more than a year. It's a fantastic watch. Great bracelet, excellent clasp. It wears a bit high off the wrist, but I like it that way. It's pretty thick and heavy so you might want to try it on first.

So far the timekeeping is excellent, well within COSC specs. Fun fact: The Chronodiver is the first mechanical watch in the world that has pushers that can be operated underwater! Lume is great, better than most Rolexes.

Think of it this way, you are getting a Submariner and a Daytona in 1 neat package. You get a dive bezel, 300m Water Resistance, a Chronograph and date complication for less than a Rolex. It's also much more legible than say a daytona, which to be honest is hard to read. I went for the blue, but the black is handsome as well. An Omega is a luxury time piece that I'll be proud to hand down to my children one day.

Firstly, I prefer Omega... they have such varieties including the vintages.

But I must say this Junghan look very handsome! Yummy!!

my concern with a Junghans is that is will scratch easily looking at the glass which is on the Max Bill photo, if you are into classy, dressy watch, lighter and don't mind it being "decorated" after certain period time of use.

else, the Omega will be a better daily workhorse.

my vote for Junghans here.

Dear all,

Thank you very very much for your opinions and especially the extra information on Junghans and the real-world comparisons btwn Omegas and Junghans.

I thought about it long and hard, and as I was still thinking, a 'Coke' Rolex GMT Master II thumped on my head and demanded that I gave it ample attention.

Alas, I was coerced into leaving the shop with it.

<"You can never go wrong with the German watches... ">

Correct!
In case, that it is really a "German" watch (!) and not just put together
over here with all parts bought in "China" ... and then only printed
"Schönburg" ( = "Nice-castel" ) on the dial.  ;D

"Junghans" can be highly recommended!
But I think, OMEGA schould rather be compared with ROLEX!
Junghans is more like ARISTO, ARCHIMEDE, MARCELLO C., SINN, DAMASKO, etc.

BB

Actually Junghans brand positioning is on par with Longines, Oris, Maurice Lacroix, Nomos. While at the same time the Erhard Junghans collection are positioned against IWC, Tag Heuer and Omega.

You are right, TJWM! - and your comparison fits better!

"Junghans-watches" went bankrupt in 2008 and was sold.
Since then it is rising like a Phoenix from the ashes.
Just have a look at this J890 movement!

This is the Seiko 6S37 column wheel with circular pinion chronograph movement re- finished and used by Junghans much like the TAG Heuer cal 1887 claimed to be reworked completely by TAG.
I have the Erhard Junghans Aerious watch that uses this movt.
