Seiko 5 Sports orange dial

Came across this watch in one of the watch forums
And thought it look really good. Questions

1/ where can I get one in Klg valley?
2/ what is the going price?
3/ have not owned a seiko before, are they durable?

Can't answer your 1st two question, I'm from East Malaysia.

For the third, Seiko is reliable. Mine get knocked, salt-watered, soiled, muded, dropped, scraped. 7 years and counting, still running like a charm. With their excessively extreme super low price, there is nothing to complain.
You have to service it thou, as every single mechanical watch. I found that Seiko 5 have a shorter service duration, around 2 years. however, servicing fee is under RM50.

What/how exactly did you find out and what makes you think the service interval is 2yrs?

When it does not keep time within an acceptable range. Or when something feel loose.
For example, few years ago I found out 1 day that the crown, when pull out or push in, doesn't have the usual firm click to it. So I send it for servicing.

I'm guessing around gaining 15 seconds a day. Actually I never timed my Seiko 5 before. If I need to adjust my watch once a week, I'll probably send it for servicing.

That's the older Orange Monster with the original 7s26 movement. Non-hacking (second hand won't stop when you pull out the crown to adjust the time) and non-hand winding (you can't wind the watch manually to "power it up", you have to shake it/wear it). Kind of inconvenient IMO as sometimes you need to wind it up before going to sleep or over a weekend if you don't want to wake up to a "dead" watch.

Slightly more expensive is the latest Orange Monster (SRP309K1) with the latest 4r36 movement. Hackable and hand-windable.
The indices (time markings on the dial) are triangular on the new model (square on the older model).



On a third party orange NATO strap.

I was comparing the monster with Seiko 5, and none Seiko 5 have hacking function. (corrrect me if I'm wrong)

Anyway, one can still stop the second hand, by "fake hacking", turning the crown back a little, the second hand should halt...

The pictures here have leather and NATO straps, the Seiko Orange Monster are also sold with metal bracelets.

I'm not too familiar with the Seiko 5 model range, so I'm can't say which which model you are referring to. Can't help you there. There are a lot of variations within the range. Good luck with your decision.

there are actually a few seiko 5 models available already with the 4r36 hacking / windable movement as found in the new monsters.
its cos of this that most ppl are now anxiously awaiting to see if the popular skx007 / 009 will also get updated.

You do know the Seiko-5 can deviate as much as 25sec per day right?

Seiko 5's are a hit n miss affair.
If you r lucky u can get one that runs within +30 secs per week.
If you r unlucky u can get one that runs +30 secs per day.
This is the result of mass production line mechanised assembly with no regulation..

GS are a totally different story on the other hand..being hand assembled and hand regulated..
In between you have the Brightz, SARBs, Phoenix, etc..

This is my weekend Seiko 5 Sports. Bought it from a local watch collector but I don't know how to verify if all parts are original. The bezel looks too clean... but I like the watch's charm. Anyone with keen eye and expertise can spot if any parts doesn't look ori? Tx!

Yes, I do realise Seiko-5 is not very precise. however, mine keep time pretty well, relatively. Cannot ignore the fact that it is very cheap.

After this thread, I just started a accuracy test on my seiko-5. Will update in a few days time. It won't be as thorough as the one did by our friend here Empty Tree thou. I don't have OCD.
