The SD has had the Comex, the Sub Double red, the GMT the Pepsi and the White Pan Am whilst others like the Daytina Paul Newman have become classics which have retained value and collectibility. Which Modern day Rolex will be remembered as an all time classic?

Agreed but in only as much as the same could be said for the SUB or GMT. They sell a lot but in 20 years time will they grow in value the same way as a GMT PN, a COMEX SD? Your 2 examples are normal Rolex watches, the ones made Today are no different to those made yesterday. A Sub loses money yet a double red sub is increasing, the increasing value and collectibility is what make the watch a modern classic - no ?

You asked about "Modern day classic Rolex" and not "collectible" hype

Increasing value and collectibility (is there such a word?) is determined by the market and seldom by the watch itself. Sorry, I'm not a collector or vintage specialist. With the number of Submariner(s) and GMT(s) being produced by Rolex, what more with it's new factory and their long production years, I doubt any of them will appreciate greatly in value.

Furthermore, asking prices and actual selling prices on collectibles can vary so much that you'd be so happy with a purchase until it's time to sell... and then it's like

Lastly, never think about making money with watches unless you're going to buy and keep for 20 years and resell. Then maybe you can get a good return, but only without taking inflation into consideration.

Now buying rare Pateks, that's a different story.....

I'm not a Rolex expert, but IMO, I pick the Daytona. If not, Daytona White gold, since it is even harder to get hands onto.

If dpkong is right, "Increasing value and collectibility is determined by the market and seldom by the watch itself." I think Daytona will do great, since the production never meet its demand, with the waiting list and stuff.

Interesting, it's my all time favourite Rolex too, I actually prefer the 8 brilliants and 2 baguettes for numerals though but this is a very close 2nd. An all time classic that will be rememberd in history, mmmm yeaah I can maybe see it, then again the same could be said for the 36mm.. Platinum make it a little more exclusive I'll give you that and I love your taste so just now I'm going with you.

The Daytona with the alleged waiting lists... again I can maybe see it, then again it all depends if they bring a new one out at Basel

I don't understand. All current models by Rolex are already all time classic, with or without the rare collectible pieces that you mentioned here.
I don't think Air King, Date Just, Day Date, Explorer, Explorer II, Milgauss or Yacht Master are less classical than the above models.
Rolex knows how to design a legendary watch and make it classic, this is what we all really admire and appreciate.

I'm also start thinking about Rolex now days. After several years chasing a Tissot, Tag , Longines and other else. I think Rolex is ultimate choice. I kind into Rolex Explorer I. The pre-owned one. Since the brand new Rolex is way out of my budget

It looks not too classic with the arabic dial. Suitable for under 40' guy I think. Looks sporty also. I'm not following Rolex actually, that's why I don't know which model is the old one or the latest one. Any idea about pre-owned Rolex Explorer I model? The approx price or tips buying Rolex? Or maybe I could start with other Rolex model?

Initially I thought Submariner was the ultimate sport watch I shall own, but slowly I know all model by Rolex is nice.
Daytona, Milgauss, Explorer, Explorer II and even two tone rose gold Date-Just are all within my wishlist now.

first, set a budget range...it looks like you're looking at something between 8-12 or even 15k...dont worry if its out of your budget at moment. be willing to save a little more and add to it if needed.

secondly, the more difficult part. short list to a few models. visit popular rolex discussion forums. talk with some of the sifus here. you'll learn a lot. But the final call is still you. NEver buy based solely on what other ppl say. You'll find those who love the simplicity of the sub and those who detest it as its so common.

once you have a target and the $$, then its time to buy. Source is another long story. Always buy the seller and never settle for cheap deals as many are too good to be true. Whether its buying from someone here, or a preowned shop in KL or even oversea seller, make sure the source is reliable.

its an exciting thing, hunting and finally owning your first rolex...

Between a Sub half-gold or Daytona black dial, I would choose the Sub (but must be blue)

Between a Sub half-gold or Daytona white dial, I would choose the Daytona

I would say the SS/gold dual tone GMT2c with ceramic bezel to be the "new classic" Rolex GMT.

I am biased of course...
