Rolex Cellini Range - Unpopular?

I notice that the Rolex Cellini range is nowhere near as popular as the conventional models. I wonder of this is because its a peripheral range of models introduced to provide a larger mix of products within the rolex stable. Any sifus here with explanation...I sense that there might be a historical reason for this. Its always great to learn of not just a brand's history but also its trials and tribulations. Look forward to learning  more!

Aren't they all manual winds or quartz? I'm not familiar however for me watches are about the mechanical movement and aesthetics. The Cellini's I have seen are much smaller than say a DJii which in my opinion is every bit the quintessential dress or every day watch.  Maybe some forum,era who have a Cellini may be able to educate us otherwise

Hi Bro...yes, from what I gather there are both quartz and hand wound...more the latter. And yes, the DJii is amazingly versatile and fits very well as a dress watch....the range within that model is also huge...the 2012 Rolex catalog devotes close to 35% to just the DJ and its variants. The Cellini range however sits right at the back and maybe accounts for 4 or 5 pages...sad as I think they really complement the evergreen Rolex models.

I think that unless one browse catalogues, you won't see any cellini's on display at ADs...
Not seeing them around makes it appear unpopular.
As for sales figures, only Rolex could answer that.

They don't have much of a resale value too, from what I gather...which is why they may be unpopular.

I wouldn't mind a platinum manual wind Cellini though.

Honestly it baffled me too. Cellini is finely crafted. Size & styling makes it a great dress watch. Been said by all bros, it can make its mark in that crowded market segment.

In fact, portugese 7 days is so entrenched in the dress watch segment. Pricing right, variants of dial colours. Of course upscale Pp, lange brequet etc will always be there.

Many times I wanted to pull the trigger but the resale price put me off.

Like others, I too like to learn more....

Maybe the product perception of a Rolex watch is so strong that it would not accommodate any model that don't fit the visual expectation.

On that rationale, Cellini might find that it would fare better if marketed as a stand alone brand and not bear the Rolex brand...like maybe Tudor. Just my humble opinion.

I second it. I have seen one white dial Cellini in round shape worn by an old gentleman, very neat and dressy.
If I am not wrong, Cellini Prince is one of the classic that really unique and desirable.

Rolex Cellini is a very fine art piece. But local market here I could not find any preowned piece.

Rolex is famous for its Sport range and Cellini provides alternate choice for the Rolex collectors. It is not so popular may be due to its pricing and competition from other watch makers, for example, Blancpain, Breguet, etc, which are more renowned for their dress watch range. Just my 2c.

Still early days. The great PR machine of Rolex have a lot of tricks to play. If we go by experience, this model could reach iconic status in a few years. Anyone wants to take a bet now?

I have noticed long time ago that Rolex Cellini vintage watches all have a very unique feature.

It's dial, hour/minutes hands, hours marker never show sign of oxidization,discoloration at all.

Compare against other brand 18k gold watch, eg. Tissot Carson 18k, the gold casing will get some reddish discoloration.

Really amazed by those vintage Cellini can achieve the consistency in perfect gold color tone.

There is something special this watch after having full service from an authorized Rolex repairer and registered with Rolex service center.

I hope I can find some times to write a full review about this "golden eye" Cellini!
