In Dilemma: Which Is the Right Choice?
« on: January 03, 2013, 10:47:27 PM »
Good morning to all Great Grande Master and Master,

I had been reading this forum for the past few month and am still very new in this new hobby. Well, frankly i just save enough for my first branded watch. However, in the last 1 week, i was in a dilemma as to what should i choose and is it the right choice given a very limited budget.

I had a budget of around RM15K - RM20K and I'm looking at the following watch:

1. IWC 3717-01 (RM11,000) Pre-Owned, Good Condition & dated 2009
2. Corum ADC Challenger 48 Chrono 753.935.06 (RM11,500) Pre-Owned, Mint Condition & Current Model

Which one should i chose??? ??? ???

As i'm still a GREEN HORN and a 100% Newbie.....should i be looking into the maintenance of it, RV and also other important point that i might have miss out?

For the small budget that i have, which will be the best among the two?

Please advise.....

Much Appreciated.  :Blue:

Though with your max stated budget of 20k just save up a wee bit more and get both! ;D

And a Happy New Year!

If only between the 2, I'd go with the IWC. But for the budget of RM15-20k, I'd go with the new Rolex Submariner Ceramic 114060. Look hard enough and you can find one.

Actually, my heart tend to go toward the IWC, however its a 4 year old watch......will there be any technical or maintenance issue? And for the Corum, though its a current model and in mint condition but its not that popular and a prefered choice among watch enthusiast........sigh....really hard to choose and have to make a choice by today.

To all great grande master, please advise ....  :Praying:

The IWC has a modified ETA engine inside. It is a really reliable movement. Also almost any competent watchmaker can service it so maintenance is not an issue. As for the Corum, I am not too sure what movement is inside it. However, at the end of the day, I'd still go with the IWC anyday.

Thanks for the advise, much appreciated.......i know i'm a bit too much to ask a second question......i also seen a posting for a Sea Dweller for sale in this forum however there is only cert for it and its within my budget (good news) so if i were to put in the consideration for the Rolex Sea Dweller as well, will it be a good choice to choose the Rolex instead of the earlier proposed 2 watches?  ??? :Praying:

For your budget you have quite a lot of good choices.. simple non-complication watches;
Omega, IWC, JLC, Rolex, etc but if you are asking only between the 2, I would choose the IWC. solid & reliable

There is no RV residual or resale value for watches... but between the 2 you will lose less with the IWC unless you love the look of the Corum so much..its also impt that you must love the look of the watch..

Frankly with your budget of 15-20K I'd take any of the other brands I mentioned. You can have more choices of IWC models not just that particular pre-owned model on sale.

Thank you very much bro Jos for the advice. as for the rolex sea dweller 16600 F series, will it be a value buy as compare to the IWC 3717-01 given the same budget?  :Praying:

Apology for so many question..... :Praying:

Hi @Newbee,

Based on your posting and subsequent replies, I do have to ask you this serious question, I hope you don't mind: Are you just buying for the sake of buying?

For the kind of money that you have set aside, you can get some serious watches for much less than that. Moreover, the only consistent trend amongst the three is just price.

Sincere apologies if I struck a raw nerve with the question. Its best to get into the correct frame of mind when entering this hobby.

Agreed with both meoramri and G.MAC.

If you want to buy a watch because you like it, go and buy the watch irrrespective of the brand.
If you worried about resale value, maintenance, reliability etc, IMO, the Rolex wins hands down among the three watches that you inquire.

Reason - Although all 3 watches will devalue (drop in value over time like all other watches), IMO the Rolex has a better resale value in Malaysia, followed by IWC. I cannot comment on the Corrum as this is not a popular model as compared with the likes of Rolex, Omega, Panerai etc.

Maintenance-wise, I believe all 3 watches is reliable with both Rolex and IWC in the fore-front. Rolex used its own in-house mechanical mechanism while IWC had adopted the ETA and modified it in-house and can be considered as its own.

Edited for typo error.

Have you try both watches in real life? That's the 1st step I would do. You may like one more than the other  ;)

Step 2 is leave the without buying the watch. Wait for 2 days and see which one you miss the most then go back to step 1.

Repeat it the 3rd time and the answer is clear. You need about a week time on this so I would tell the seller to put both watches on hold for me until then.

Over 10k is serious money for a watch. Pity if is spend it on 2nd best.

PS: The approach above saves me from buying a lots of silly thing.

Sorry for digressing, but since Sea Dweller is discussed, may I know if you think it is a good deal to buy a new and unworn M series Sea Dweller for approx RM20k? Do you think it is a keeper?

We were all newbies at one stage bro. I will always recommend Rolex if ever people discuss RV. Not that you will make money. Only that there is less to lose.

For your first serious watch, a Rollie is a good choice if you are not sure if you are going to keep it forever and hence worried about re-sale.
However having said that do you want to buy only watches with good resale value hence limiting yourself to only Rollies for your entire horological journey.....

It's definitely a good start but at the same time there is a huge wide horological world out there with unlimited choices to explore.. don't worry you'll definitely move on to alternatives as your tastes changes or gets more refined over time..

Thank you very much to all the Grande Master in MWF. Bravo! I really get good advise from all the seniors.

Having said so; now my choice of first watch are being stream down to 3 ultimate choice for the final selection and try it on the wrist before confirm payment to either seller. And the choice are as follow:

1.  Rolex Submariner 16610 V Series (Pre-Owned) FULLSET
2.  Rolex Sea Dweller (Pre-Owned) Watch & Paper Only
3.  IWC 3717-01 (Pre-Owned) FULLSET

Senior is right, at the end of the day besides all the factors, need to put on the wrist first then only know the feel of it.  ;D

Thanks all MWF Seniors!

I could not agree more with this statement!! Just to share a personal experience; I made a silly mistake ealier last year when I ordered a 43mm Anonimo Militare limited ed. To begin with I don't have a big wrist and my biggest mistake was not trying it on my wrist when I made the decision to buy. Admittedly, it was sheer impulse on my part. Brought home and found out to my disappointment that it looked kinda akward on my wrist. The crown is at 6 o'clock position so it made the lug feels bigger. Now that watch is sitting in the box and I really don't know what to do with it. A watch may look beautiful but whether it looks nice on you is a different matetr altogether. Expensive lesson learnt!

NewBee,

Not at all. We were once newbie to watch collecting, and we were guided (or poisoned) along the way by good people on watch collecting either by advices, knowledge on watches etc.
Come one day, you will be in a position to help other newcomers to this hobby.

Rainmaker,

Put it on sale if it doesn't suit you or "doesn't sing to you" anymore. There could be some interest watch collecter out there who may provide a good home for your watches.

Cheers.
