Seeking fellow members past experiences:
Would you cull 2/3 of your favourite watches(daily beater) to get your dream watch?
My reservation will be that I may lose interest on the new one after awhile but lost my daily beater (2/3) which I wear on rotation.

That was the route i took when getting one my grail.
So for me i would say yes.
Knowing your collection i know if you wanna get those daily beater again in future its plenty around.

That time i sold 3 plus top up to get ONE.

Yes I would sell 2/3 to buy a grail if they ever come by. It will take away the inconvenience of having to wear so many with only one wrist available. I have contemplated many times not for any grail but just keep a few. Until the grail comes by or not.

I sold a heck more than 2-3 watches to get my 2012 grail in April this year, the GO Navigator Perpetual Calendar and no regrets whatsoever but then you seem to be unsure that you'll lose interest in your grail? I wanted the GO Perpetual Calendar since it was launched in 2010 but didn't dare to pay that kind of money for a watch then….it took me 2 years to make up my mind..so its unlikely that I will tire of it so soon…

So a grail watch to me is one that has been on your desired list for a long long time not a watch that you like after having seen it only a few times.

I have never regretted selling any of my previous watches to move on to newer acquisitions but I guess it all boils down to each individual's personality & traits…i.e. how sentimental you are…..having said that there are some watches that I'd never ever sell…..
For me, its more like been there, done that, what's next...

I think your reservation is fully justified.

Your dream watch or grail watch is only a dream / grail watch until the next dream watch / grail watch comes to your atention. Since the watches presently in your collection are still in rotation, why divest them? I'll keep them and buy the new watch. If the new watch fully overshadows your present collection to the extent the latter are rendered redundant and cause them to gather dust, then you may decide to sell them.

A watch presently in your collection worths at least 2 watches out there in the market....

My answer..YES!! Either way, it also gives you a good excuse to obtain more beaters. But in all honesty and seriousness, i would definitely let 2-3 daily beaters for a grail.

just make sure when you get that grail, that it doesnt end up in storage cos you feel its too pretty or too precious to be worn

YES I would for a Grail Watch.

Grail by my definition, is a watch which you have yearned and desired for a long long time and a watch which is not easy to get even if you have the money. It could even be a watch you might not even wear it as often and only worn on special occasions.

There will always be daily beaters and Seiko offers the best value money in the RM600 range, so i wouldnt be too worried about daily beaters.

On a more recent experience, I sold 9 of my watches to get 1 really good one. That's more consolidating my collection, but was it worth it...YES it was.

Get the new watch first before getting rid of any in your collection. You don't want to regret later if the love ends up as divorce. I won't recommend this strategy for women though.. unless you can ensure one will never find out about the other.

1. Cull 2/3 or 9 to get one
2. Excuse to replace the daily beaters
3. Dont cull but get the grail n dump it rest later
4. The present collection is easily replaceable
And only one says Dont cull!!

All of these are not that difficult to buy pre-owned, if you decide you still want them back later..

Well, if it's a holy grail, then I guess I'd agree and say get rid of a few. But then, you did mention you're not entirely sure if you wouldn't get bored of it after awhile.

If it's just a grail, then buy first, flip later.

going slightly OT here..

for me, grail would be something I want that's achievable within the near future, not a rare piece and just a matter of choice eg. new/pre-owned or price.

a holy grail is something like a Patek minute repeater in platinum...

After reading the advise from the seniors, I guess I shld say grail w/o holy cos it is not really a big deal, no not perpetual or something in the hundreds of k. But a big step for me since I started this hobby 3 years ago.

Years back I bought my 1st watch which is a seiko and it is Pp Ellipse lookalike. I try to post some pix next time. Somehow Pp as a brand is the pinnacle for my collection.
