On reaching quotas to sell...
« on: November 18, 2012, 12:25:37 PM »
Noticed that some new members had just simply filled in 'quotas'  on comments / posting  in order to sell their wares at MWF....

My 2 cts tells me this is unethical....what say you?

I am almost a recovered watchaholic, but last checked shows only 70% recovered. How?

I think it would be better to increase it to 100. 25 is still too low. Problem with buying over the internet is the issue of trust. Most of the sellers are just one off thread posters.

Increase it to 100 and they will post 100 short replies.

This is a real poser. I am as guilty as the next guy who hawked their wares here after meeting their quota of posts. As Hanz puts it, let the buyers beware. I had some pokes but my sale was eventually concluded with a non member due mainly to my unverified status. Posting trends like mine may not make one a 1 thread poster although we can deduce or predict the direction many of the new members will post by their 26th posting just by judging their preceding replies. Sadly that will be the last we hear of them. The mods are trying to curtail this practice or affliction, but filtering out the unworthy from the others is going to be an unpleasant exercise. I'll probably end up as a discard by now judging from my earlier postings. Still as mods, they have every right to keep the house in good order.
Verification by mods before allowing  a member to venture into the trade zone may be a better alternative to a quota base process. My half past six cent thots.

It is called 'legal cheating'... unethical? yes... but, there is no rules have been broken. In my humble opinion, just let it be. It is hard to control everyone as this is a public forum.

(...and this is my 21st post, 4 more to go..  ;D)

Then i will quote one section of the rules.

Newly registered members will have to accumulate at least 25 quality posts before they are allowed to post any items in the Classifieds Section. (Quality posts mean posts which contribute to the discussion/topic at hand. Single word, single sentence or "out of context" posts designed to boost post count do not quality and will be deleted by the moderators.)

This is to encourage new members to participate more actively in the forum and allow others to get better acquainted with new members.

Please don’t get me wrong. This rule will only be materialized if the so-called non quality post automatically not be counted into the post count or manually deleted by mods. Is there any of their non quality post has been deleted? No… Why? Because MWF mods are normal human being who have real life and day job, and almost impossible to monitor this forum 24/7.

So, if their post has not been deleted and still counted towards their post count, they will consider that their post is a quality one and no rules have been broken. Again, it is hard to control and monitor. It will consume a lot of monitoring time.

My apologies if my posts offend any of you guys.

Oh no worries brotha.
That reply was not directed at you.
Its to "those" who are thinking to "cheat" the system.

Very true the mods in this forum has a day job and we login to moderate as and when we can.

And there are quite a few members we have deleted their 2-3 words reply within the few hours they have registered and post FS thread.

can't it be set so that only certain sections will contribute to post count.
so perhaps everything apart from what's in the Main forum section shouldnt count towards anything.
that would make moderating easier too.

Forum rules only try to make this place discussion-centric and not merely a marketplace. For that, there are many other websites to post your wares. If someone wants to con you, they can take their sweet time and make the post count. Buy the seller and not just the post count.

Very interesting topic u brought out here David..Personally I agree with most of the opinion given by you guys..To raise it to 100 postings will only leads to short/meaningless replies.Furthermore, it seems to contradict with the forum statement "This is to encourage new members to participate more actively in the forum and allow others to get better acquainted with new members." Perhaps mods can create a special topic where members can highlight particular issue/grievances etc. Something like the "good guys" topic but more like the other way around. Just to share my experience, recently I pm 1 member who wanted to sell his PAM but received no reply. Thinking that mbe he didn't visit this as frequently as me I decided to SMS him personally..Again to no avail. Thats when I decided to check his profile and I realised he logged in to forum almost as frequent as me!! (Everytime I logged in he also logged in within the same day!!). & until now his ad is still in the members want to sell section!! Why bother to advertise when u don't even bother to reply 1 simple inquiry? As for me, my watches are definitely not for sale irrespective of whatever brands, price etc & hopefully god permit me to keep it that way in the future.. ;)

By the way, out of curiosity how do you guys evaluate members "ranking"? How many postings are required from newbie to become jr member,sr member, full member and so on??  :police:

Yes, agreed with this suggestion.
To have 100 short replies is not easy. Maybe must include their replies must be more than X no. of words, then they qualify as a reply.
