What are the MISTAKES you made in this hobby?
« on: October 11, 2012, 03:22:44 PM »
Be it a purchase, the path you took anything related to this hobby.

When i reflect back, there wasnt a single watch i bought that i "regretted".

Its the kind of watches i guess.

My mistakes would be the flea market finds. Nice and unique it may be, but the hassle of the watch being 2-5mins slow per day, taking it to service is just not worth it IMO.

Lucky i only made 3 mistakes buying in the flea markets. Lesson learned. Lucky not too big a mistake.

How bout you guys?

Is there a watch you bought that you thought WTF was i thinking? :P

Below is was my first flea market buy. Lovely Genta designed (originally) microrotor movt.

The other pics i cant find in my photbucket anymore.

Mistakes?

Joining watch forums and developing desires for watches that just seem to get more and more expensive...

I think it's less on what I did and more on what I should've done.
What if we can wind back the time to 15-20 before with the knowledge we have now?

What about one watch you bought that was a mistake?

Maybe my question was too broad and vague?

So far, I don't think I have made any in this regard. It usually takes me a long time to purchase a watch starting from the day I develop an interest in it until the day i actually buy it. To me, it's like a test of time, how much I really like it and whether I really want it.

Buying a lookalike watch from microbrand thinking it can be a cheaper course of entry(PAM or Rollie). I done this on too many occasion that I rather not list them all.

It doesn't work!

I end up with a watch that remind me I should have wait until I get enough funding. Now it sits at a far side of the corner, unloved  :-[

That shouldn't happen to any watch. I'm going to horology hell for this. :(

Regards
Tyler

When we love n like it , we buy it. after some time when we got tired of it n try selling it we felt it was a mistake buying it in the first place. Well that's human nature., but here is something for thought: we always complain about our shoes until we saw some without feet..regards tony

I don't think I have made a mistake yet in this hobby because of the lessons learned earlier in life. I would like to share it with you guys.

When I first started collecting stamps when I was very young, I just collected any stamps I could lay my hands on. I then realised the mistake of that strategy as it creates a collection that is purely random. To keep me in check, I learned to write something about every stamp I've collected and from this journal/diary/log book, a distinct collection philosophy was formed. I researched what I wanted and then proceeded to try to get it.

I started collecting watches when I touched 40. I followed the same strategy. I started researching/writing about it and from there, my collection grew following a certain direction.

IMHO, if someone feels getting into the hobby is a mistake, then perhaps his hobby is just hunting, seeking and buying watches instead of collecting and appreciating the watches he bought. His primary interest lies in the thrill of doing the transaction, be it at an AD, a private seller or through the web. The watch is the secondary interest.

I guess Peter Takashi's question is whether we have made any mistake buying a watch which we later find inappropriate. In my case, yes, there was such a watch. Bought a Fortis 24-hr watch many years ago in Singapore. My deepest regret. As the hour hand went round once in 24 hrs (instead of the usual 12), reading the time required some effort from my inflexible brain.

Yups thats one i mean.
If there is any watch in particular sounded good on paper, looked good, tested, bought then later found out for one reason or another was not right.
