i will always buy a watch brand that could provide long-term service...and of course a watch brand with ability to retain value. i have a Hamilton Open Secret based ETA movement, the watch served me very well and i like it so much, but when the time i want to sell...IT IS NOT EASY!! :HammerHead:

if you want a lovely time, you should have a lovely watch...because time is precious

I buy watch based on what I like..and some time based on movement , sometime brand and some time both...so just follow ur heart and buy within ur mean..

Huge different for Same eta 2824 in different brand name.. U may spend RM 3-5k for Hamilton with eta mvnt but would u spend 20k+ for Alain Siberstain?
Esp those 'hot' brand with eta 6497.. Are u ready to fork out 15-25k for that?
Just my 2 cents.. Happy hunting

Some buy the brand, some the design n some the movement. If you like a watch with all these 3 things, no hesitation, go get it. regards tony.

I presume you're talking about common ETA automatics or Valjoux 7750 chronograph movement. If that's the case then I would pay more attention on the design of the watch.

No hard and fast rule but the dial is an important part for me then follow by the case.

You would get a better answer if you post some photo or mention specific watch you have in mind.

There is no right or wrong answer.
People have the right to pay for what they like
However they must really know fact from fiction.
As long as you made a decision based on facts, it doesnt matter as long as you are happy..

I value movements first then finishing, pedigree and lastly, the look must not put me off when its on my wrist. Having said that there are 3 favourite brands that fit my criteria...

Personal taste and preferences evolve over years, hopefully not 1 full circle otherwise it means we haven't learnt a single thing.

Men simply cannot accept a Cartier Santos with quartz movement selling at very high price. But people especially women love the design of Santos.
So all goes back to the same question, what is your choice?

The Daytona C in Steel is my dream watch now...

hi guys! Just want to share here. As we know, as an example ,most popular automatic movement on the market ETA 2824, 2836-2 or Valjoux 7750. For me, what makes different of the price among brand is the finishing of the watches and component within the movement. You could buy the watch using the valjoux 7750 from 4k to more than 10k. What make the difference is, some high end brand, include the same movement with higher quality parts like Nivaflex NO barrel spring, Nivarox I balance spring, or Glucydur balance wheel, balance wheel with weight balance and the movement sometime include with shock absorber system like Incabloc. The price getting higher with highly decorated oscillating weight. All this part bring an extra luxury to the brand. Just like the racing car, they use same basic engine but with different component to bring more performance.

I feel that buying movement is more professional. Just ask yourself why do you need the watch. Want people to turn heads, then buy brand and design. What to appreciate high end mechnical movements, attract attention second, than buy movements. Just my opinion.

Is it safe to say that buying movement first is generally more costly.  :)

Interesting topic.

I would look at the movement first.
Not willing to pay tens of thousands for a watch brand with a commonly used
movement.

Watch design does matter but its the whole package that counts.

in that case then u must look @  watches starting at 100 thousands RM and above . Most watches below that are using common or modified common ETA :)
