Disgusted by peeling watch boxes.
« on: July 21, 2012, 02:29:12 PM »
I'm sure some of our fellow Mwf. will have  experience of boxes peeling off, some rotting n some even broke into sooth .My rolex green box got one side peeled off when it got stick together when i try to open it. After paying so much for a watch n you get something like that it really boiled you up . I also have this peeling problem with my dark blue ML box , fortis. For me i think Panerai made one of the best watch boxes in consideration with materials used . In future i think watch boxes should be made with climate treated materials. Any  of u guys n gals have this experience to share or are there any precautions to take???

Yes. That day when I took out the azimuth watch box for selling the watch
The box outer plastic is peeling off... Lucky buyer is a type of person who say he do not need box! He jus want the warranty card!!!

Beside pams...
My ecw come withan genuine leather box n cert cover

The ennebi wooden box is fantastic n will last 100 yrs

Last time my first edition of the iwc Portuguese 7days also come with a wooden box made from local wood there...

Or better with mih... It came with newspaper wrapping...

Hahaha.. I have to admit I suffered from the same problem as well. Now, before I store any of my leather watch boxes, I will wipe it with some leather conditioner. That way, the leather (or in most cases, leatherette / PU) stays supple longer and doesn't peel as easily. Do this once every year (like how you take care of your sofa) and the boxes will last a long time.

For Rolex Boxes...the tips and tricks are to put a paper or some sort of foam sheet in between the lower and upper lid when you close it.

By doing this, it will not "peeled" anymore.

Surprisingly I don't seem to face the same problem. My oldest, a Seiko 5 box of 1997 still looks the same. I suspect it must be the level of humidity when it is kept.

I don't think card board will peel off

leather also won't peel off, But crack or fungus grow...

Outer box Pu also crack n outer layer peeling off by force or on edges

The peeling off part normally is the inner box those spun/cushion outer leather alike finishing...

I think the worst packaging is Rolex vis-a-vis its price n branding. I had the same problem until I have decided to keep it in my bookcase cupboard which is cool but dry. The last time when I checked(bout 1 year back), it is alright.

i wonder what % of watch buyers or specifically, Rolex buyers actually keep the box. i'm sure that Rolex is smart enough to know a very low number of their buyers actually value the box. if i am not mistaken, the earlier Rolex Day-Date models came in much nicer leather boxes compared to now.

why spend more on a box when few buyers actually keep it? lower profits and more rubbish to recycle...

I actually keep all the boxes. Some incl the outer boxes. Well, sometimes for 20k+, the Rolex box really dissapoint me. The earlier ones are better, imo. At least the inside cover is veneer finished, I am not comparing the box size. The current internal finished is felt-like fabric, so imitable n lack the finished passion.
The base, without a protective layer, will easier tear or worn off.

Well, Rolex is still the brand and they are selling. Maybe if and when the sales staggered, who knows what they will do......

Thank you guys for sharing your experience , much appreciated. A friend of mine who stayed in a 22nd floor apartment doesn't have this problem, maybe it's because of the humidity..

For the kind of money that we pay, i must say that rolex box is really cheapskate.  :mooning:

I mean placing it next to other watches which are of comparable monetary value such as panerai, iwc etc... you will appreciate that rolex is really trying to rip us off.

A post by fellow MWF , Meoramri ,recently of a site selling China made watch movements, well for a chonograph movement it only cost rm 80.00. I think for the Swiss made watches the profit margin is very very very high.

Price are set according to the perception of the brand. Eg Rolex = ppl think is high end. That why rolex set the price to match ppl perception. It will be totally wrong if rolex set the watch price at the lower spectrum  :police:

what's the GDP of China compared to Switzerland? what's the average wage? you cannot compare apples and oranges.

maybe you would be happier if Rolex provided genuine leather lined boxes made of mahogany and raised prices by a few hundred RM??

for me, boxes are good if you were buying a gift. for my own use, i wouldn't need a box and prefer a good discount.

Assuming the Ball fireman and ML pontos chrono selling at almost the same range., how much do you think their movement, the ETA 7750 cost?  My guess is maybe around rm 1 k... We cannot compare gdp, if we do how come the cars in malaysia is selling higher than the whole EU ? And how come the property prices in Shanghai is almost the same as New york if not higher?  To the watch manufacture , i think the bottom line is how much profit are we going to make rather than how much this piece is worth..

Originally the previous Rolex box was made of leather . They should maintain or improve from there n  not back paddle or down grade their quality...

T he point of  argument is simple as Abc. Most people will construe that after paying so much for a piece of high end watch, anything that comes with the watch should be of equal quality, and weather they want to keep or throw away the box is up to them. Nobody throw away a rol box anyway, you need to pay over rm. 200.00 for a used one.
