AP 15300 & 15400
« on: June 25, 2012, 11:31:59 AM »
Hi

The AP 15400 41mm will replace the 15300 39mm. Today all the 3 models 15400, 15300 & 15202 in 3 colours white, blue & black are available at starhill boutique. A very rare occasion.

I am thinking of getting the 15300 39mm. Though it is 39mm, it wears big and is popular with Asian wrist. The 41mm is definitely over sized w most Asian wrists but it is a trend nowadays. Both sing to me. The price diff is approx RM5K, 15400 being higher.

I am told that the 39mm will be discontinued by this year and is out of stock among AD's. I appreciate comments and opinion from all members and Seniors whether I should go for the 39mm or 41mm, if I were to pull the trigger. BTw, I have booked one model.

Thank you

My vote goes to the 39mm...
It's being discontinued this year? I thought it was discontinued the same time as the 15400 was announced?
If available, I would go for the 15300 1st and if the need arises, still can get the 15400 later...

Actually it is no longer in production, I am told. The stock that is available are the balance; that is the reason the 39mm is not found at the AD's shops.

Thanks Terrence.

Both are pretty similar i will say, same AP 3120 caliber which a lot of people described it as one of the best in house movement in the world which i totally agree.

Well, i think it boils down to your wrist size. If yours is above 6.5" and if you are so used to Panerai, then go for 15400 instead of 15300. if u think panerai is too big for u and u can barely wear says submariner cos your wrist is around 6" then 15300 will probably fit you more.

I will personally go for 15400 because i dont generally like discontinued model save and except very collectible and or special edition model. 15300 is not collectible so I will go for newer version. Also, i think 15300's 39" is not "man enough". U know what i mean if you comparing RO and ROO.

15202 cost around 20% more than 15400. Moreover, I think the production is much lesser and hard to come by. 15202 is not my cup of tea cos it doesnt have a second hand which i like. Also, its carrying AP2121 cabliber which was licensed by JLC (historically it was partly owned by AP). I wont pay premium for non in house caliber since AP has produced a better inhouse caliber with 60 hours power reserve now.

Well, going for APROO diver is different ball game altogether i will say cos diver is ROO and not RO. This is akin CLK and C class which is in different water. But having said that, after bought the diver, now I am seriously considering 15400 which is like a 4 door sedan car which is very good for daily use, not to mention transparent backcase where one will get to admire the beautiful movement.
I am broke but I am happy...

i agree w the current trend of over sized particularly women. May I ask
1.'is 39mm AP15300 not the right size in today's fashion?'
2. will 41mm looks too big for royal oak? I mean Pam epitomizes ruggedness and 'man'. afterall it was mean for the navy whereas RO is much refined (pun)
3. i thought that at the right size, royal oak can be both a dress and sports watch too.

naturally we always love something new, in this case its 15400. Its a case of having two 'lovers', both equally desirable!

all your opinions are much appreciated.
Thanks

sm,
I would tell you that it all depends on how each watch looks on your wrist and your own preference..

The bezel width can give a different look given the same overall diameter. The watch should look proportionate on your wrist and that's where your individual preference comes in...what looks proportionate to you may not to another.

The AP RO is one of those watches still on my small wishlist although I have to stop buying for 2012...
Can you pm me what is the current lowest net discounted price for the 15400....are you buying from the Starhill AP boutique or from an AD? Good luck and do post up the pic once u pull the trigger..

Bros,

1. starhill boutique - the ADs no stock for 15300. I have tried both and 39mm gives uncle(thats me) a more polished look whereas the 41mm lug sticks out of my 6.6" wrists. I wear the gmt ceramic and pam 44mm comfortably. However both sing to me, as explained 39 gives a more refined look, classic and subdue whereas the 41 is contemporary, ie loud and liken to a 'having arrived' look. The 15400 LP is in the mid 50's and discounts varies cos it will be available in the ADs soon.

2. Tyler- I think both will fall off its prices once it is out of the shop. Over the past 2 years dabbling in watches, I think only Rolex will have a lesser haircut cos of their yearly price increase mechanism and PP cos it is rare in the pre-owned market. To me, it is never an investment but an expensive indulgence. I kiv the 15202

It is a joy ride for me to be part of the mwf community and your suggestions do help me in my decision making. Again, many thanks.

I like the 15300.
Nicely proportioned. Fits well. The 41mm just released and you have many many years to decide to buy one later if you choose to.

Unless you fancy and want to be the first to own this otherwise u may want to wait for AD and comparing the price around. Problem with AP is one is able to get a pretty steep haircut somewhere, so you may suffer a huge depreciation if your discount is not right.

I understand walk in at Spore boutique can giveoff plus tax refund now. HK boutique is off.

I will not pull the trigger if i dont get  off the list price. But thats just me. If you dont want to wait and prefer to be the first to own it then do go ahead by all means. Welcome to AP club.

You're welcome, sm.  :D

BTW I went to the AP boutique this afternoon to try on both the 15202 and the 15400 just to get feel about them.

I find the dial of the 15400 is a bit out of balance due to its size. I really like the 15202. The thinness gives the watch a bigger presence while the small tapestry makes the watch more elegant than the previous 15300. However what I love most is the discreet date window. Nicely hidden away by using the same color as the dial.

I like it a lot.  :D

The movement finish is superb compare to the 15400 (I haven't examine a 15300). It is a trusted movement share by the holy trinity(AP, PP, VC). From my understanding JLC didn't own this movement it was fund by the 3 brands at the time. JLC only manufacture the ebauche for the 3 brands. Then each of them take time to finish and improvement the movement as they see fit.

The boutique only receive two 15202 so far and it's all sold. I can guess the reason why. There are plenty 15400 available.

While at it I try on the ROO Forged Carbon Diver and the Bumble Bee. I have high hope for the Diver but was disappointed by its looks. Maybe deep down I am crying for the Bumble Bee. If only my wrist is bigger ... sigh.

The 15202 is selling at just slightly higher in the mid 60k. Pricey but not totally unjustifiable. (Hey if I'm looking for bang of the buck AP is not a brand that I will from)

I'm done with watch purchase for 2012. Maybe this classic will find its way back in 2013. Who knows  ;)

Thanks for reading.

Regards
Tyler

Their bracelet gap edges pinching on my wrist when I tried them on. 15400 sits better on my wrist. But same movement with 15300, hard to justify the price difference.. Maybe got lucky in preowned market later...

hi,

pre-owned : some weeks back I did pm some of our merchants asking for RO but unsuccessful. If you do have any avail, please pm me, thanks. The AP Manager is willing to hold it until end of the week; it doesn't mean that it will be sold but it will be on a first come basis. I agree that all new watches depreciate over time. Sometimes rule by heart is more fun than by head. haha

15202 : I agree w Tyler that it is a beautiful timepiece. Actually what arouse my interest in the royal oak are those blogs comparing PP nautilus and AP royal oak. That's what make a brand, I think.
