To own or not to own ??? ( a Second Rolex )
« on: June 05, 2012, 08:22:53 PM »
Dear all,

I have bought a Rolex GMT master IIc TT about 5 days ago. Setting me back RM30K++. Now I am thinking to buy the SS version.

Reasons : (1) the TT version is a beautiful piece but not suitable for my daily use. I am a sales personel and need to visit a lot of customers each day, going places, things like that. The TT version attracts too much attention, and too prone to scratches. It looks more like a dinner wear.
               (2) I like the Rolex GMT Master IIc so much that I wish to own a SS version. It is more versatile as I can just put on my wrist and go anywhere I want with it. Swimming, playing golf, playing badminton, seeing customers, shoppings, fightings  >:( etc...
               (3) I heard the Rolex prices will go up soon, and buying them now will be a good investment?? (Can anyone verify this?)

P.S. I am openned up to other models and other brands too. Prefer a well known brand. Budget is less than RM20K (:Praying:).

I am giving myself two weeks to sleep over this...  :-\

Any opinions by any forumer is much appreciated.

2 GMTs? Is a no for me.
Why don't you consider a submariner (14060m)? Just discontinue and might still able to get new that within your budget.
Sitting lower on wrist compared to GMT, no date with cleaner dial.

i would not buy another GMT2 if i already had one. they look too similar other than the gold trim.

i don't see an issue wearing a TT GMT2 daily and for any activity. i have been using a TT Daytona for quite a few months and no one has noticed it. maybe you're feeling too self-conscious?

Rolex price going up soon?

It raises its prices usually twice a year.

Every single brand does at least once a year.

+1. A new 14060m will easily come within budget with enough cash spare to buy more than a few coffees. Discreet and simple, yet classy.

We think alike! I have a Rolex GMT master IIc TT too and I'm looking for a SS Sub-c with date. Tend to be more versatile as you said. the GMT TT is a very nice watch indeed but I would nvr wanna get 2 GMTs. lol. a SS Sub is a good choice. go for it!

Well as far as I can see the options for a S/S Rolex around 20k would be:

1. 14060M for round 12k
2. Milgauss for round 15k
3. 16622 Yachtmaster for round 20k
4. 116610 Submariner Date for round 25K
5. 216570 Explorer II for round 25K
6. 16570 Explorer II for round 13k

Those are rough estimates of prices for both preowned and new. Please correct the figures of I am wrong. I am only assuming that u prefer 40mm and beyond Rolex sports watches.

Btw all these, including your 116713 are regular production pieces and could hardly be considered as a wise investment. With the price increase every year, the only thing you get is wearing it for "free" if you decide to sell it a few years down the road. any additional extras would have eaten into your servicing cost. That is also assuming that you would follow a periodic servicing.

I dont see why you cant have 2 GMT2c. It is your preference, your money and you are going to wear it. But for me, I'd go with a Rolex Submariner Ceramic, one of the new Omega Planet Ocean with the 8500 calibers or a Panerai. A budget of RM20k is a very healthy budget for a watch. At the end of the day, buy what makes you happy. As for rolex as an investment, it is not a very good idea. Even if the value were to appreciate, it would take a long time. The price increase are for new watches. Older ones only have holding value, not appreciating value. Unless you have a limited production or edition like the red submariner, Comex subs, or the double red seadweller, any Rolex which you get at retail are not limited at all. You will be surprised at the amount of Rolex-s which Rolex produce. And the next thing is to look at the demand and the taste for watches in the future. With the new Ceramic bezels on Rolex, that is the current 'in' thing. The prices of the older second hand Rolex-s with the aluminium bezel do not soar as much due to the change in people's taste. So at the end of the day, buy something that you will love 10-15 years down the road and see your luck then. All the best in the hunt for your next watch.

My opinion = Not to own same GMT watch.
Yes, to own another Rolex model, say the Sub.

Thanks folks for all the recommendations and comments. Can I say the followings,

(1) 90% of the folks will not buy two watches with same model but different versions.

(2) Buying Rolex watches are not investing, you lose money instead of making.

(3) There isn't any rumor that Rolex prices will go up recently.

However, after wearing the my GMT TT for about 3 full days, I kind of getting used to it. But would still prefer to own a SS version of maybe Explorer, Sub or even GMT. Mainly for their versatility.

I am also suprised not many mention other brands such as Breitling or Ball or... (I don't know many brands), that maybe similar to Rolex Sport Watches and have the pricings to match (or lower than Rolex SS Sport watches).

Are there any Breitling lovers here...? Many years ago I kind of wanted to buy a Breitling Superocean Chrono. I think it is quite rugged and maybe "youthful".

It is not a rumour. It is a fact. Rolex prices went up at the beginning of the week by 6-12% already. As for Breitling, well i think Omega has more bang for the buck. It is still a good watch nonetheless but to each their own. Or you can join in the Panerai craze.

I'd go for a Omega.. not to fancy... or if you can pay up 44k go for my brand :) Halda 2 watches in one and at the moment only around 60 available (no more will be made) just delete this msg if its against any rules

+ 1 Omega as well. You get a very good quality watch that is on the same level of Rolex at 1/2 the price. A Seamaster/PO/Speedmaster would be very nice. Of course Sub/GMT still the more "flashy" watch. But since you already have a GMT2 TT (Great Choice! Beautiful watch), the SS GMT/Sub looks too similar lar. If funds allow, maybe a SS Daytona if you want to stick with Rolex?

The GMTIIc will always be a good buy.
Whether you have one or more. If you
like it and planning to use it as a beater
or for daily use, as SS is more versatile
than TT why not get one preloved, which
would be an even better deal

Well, TT rolie sport watch fetch relatively low resell value. For instance, used ss daytona will cost higher than tt daytona eventhough tt daytona is higher. So, if 'retaining value' is what you have in mind, better stick with SS rolie sport.

I will probably go for ss submariner if i were you. well, i think the DNA of most rollie sport watches except daytona all look alike anyway. But i wont buy a tt and ss GMT. TT GMT is not that bling in my opinion. Indeed, normal people wont be able to recognise GMT as a rollie.  :Laughing_on_floor:

If retaining value is your concern, grab a ss rollie. better still, buy it outside Msia where you will be able to get a bit of haircut. But again, you will probably still lose some money if you decided to flip it to second hand shop after a few years. Guess your better bet is to sell it mwf people. US list price just went up around 9% on 1 June.

hi guys. Appreciate the various ideals chipped in by fellow forumers.

I went to KL city attending a function last night and had a change to browse around watch shops in Star hills and Pavillion. Boy, am I surprise to see so many watch shops in those areas and soooo many different brandssss... I was there for about two hours with my wife, and must admit there are so many different brands that I must have got myself confused on what should I be looking for???  :-\

I realise that Rolex SS sport watches are normally expensive and can retain higher second hand values due to high demands.

A SA from S*****, asked me to consider other brands instead since I already have GMT master IIc TT. He recommend IWC sport model. Unfortunately I had to rush off to the airport and couldn't stay long enough to listen to his recommendations... One thing for sure, the shop front is HUGE!!! OMG, I didn't know a luxury watch shop can be as big as a mini supermarket. Unfortunately this is the last shop that we went in. Should have gone to this "supermarket" first to see and listen and learn about luxury watches.

To sum up, I lost my focus today as to find my daily beater. I was overwhelmed with the vast choises available to me. If you guys can help me out here, my criterias for my daily beater, are :

1) Steel bracelet,
2) Solid build, luxury feel, not too bling,
4) Can wear while doing sports, construction site visits, etc...
5) Prefer with date and day and GMT function,
6) Water Resistant to 100m, can be used for recreational diving,
7) RM20K budget.

Any recommend on the BRAND and MODEL NUMBER should be suffice, I will google the details from the web. Thanks. :)

I would have shot of with the Explorer II but with the requirement having a day indicator as well is difficult. So the only one I can think of is the Longines Master Collection L27154785. Well within your budget and ticks all your requirements. Oh and it comes with a steel bracelet as well.

Hi, thank you for all the recommendations.

After all the hard thinkings on my side, I will give the GMT SS a pass for the time being.

During these two weeks' time, I openned up my choices a fair bit. I would actually like to try the followings :

(1) Breitling Chronomat 44 GMT
(2) IWC Aquatimer
(3) ...... still searching..........  :-\

Thanks guys... As you can see, I mainly prefer sport models... Feel free to chip in your recommendations..
