I have heard the version of Sir Hilary actually wore a Smith while Norgay spot a Rolex. No one can say for sure.

Regards
Tyler

It is one of those things that we will never know I guess. The funny thing is, in the letter Hillary wrote to Smiths 'I carried your watch to the summit. It worked perfectly'. Why carried and not 'wear'?

Tenzing's Rolex was given to him by his friend and mountaineer Raymond Lambert.

There were no Explorer model at the time. What rolex did is to take their normal production watch and fit it with special oil and part to make the watch durable for the expedition. These were in a way "prototype". The Explorer 1 were born out of these research.

Hope this help.

since we're still waiting for the unveiling and on the topic of mountaineering, I am always more intrigued by the question of George Mallory and Andy Irvine reaching the summit first before perishing.  The facts seemed to suggest no but the romanticism (Mallory's guts in wanting to try against all odds, having young Irvine as a companion to reach the summit and the promise by Mallory to his wife that he will leave her photo on the summit) in us would love a twist to the story.

To add to the spice, Mallory's body was found many years later and they could not find the photo.  Interestingly, it seemed that he was wearing a Rolex?   (although there's also a dispute to this)

To be fair. Sir Hillary did said (in a respectful manner) that even if MAllory reached the top, a complete conquering of any high altitude mountains should include a successful descent because the journey down is equally dangerous...
