Beginner - Which PAM to get??
« on: November 09, 2009, 06:41:25 PM »
A bit regret joining you guys last Sat...  :-\ still blur about the Panerai model, looks quite similar to me but the price ranging from 1xk to 1xxk..
I don't think i can fully understand why people crazy about PAM until i get one for myself..
my preference
1) Sandwich dial
2) Date <-- good to have..

Should i get a old OP movement or straight aiming for 9000 movement? 312 and 320 is selling about SGD9K and SGD12K respectively by grey importer in Singapore..  Suggestion appreciated..

sandwich dial + date.... those historical and contemporary line do not have these 2 features together...
so if that is what u want... better get the in house movement p9000 or p2000 series... either pam312 and 233 have these 2 features!

Try PAM 111. Although without the date, but it has all the features. The transparent case back is awesome....

Hi Muachee,
I suggest you start of with one of the Historical models with the Unitas movements.
If you find that your interest in Panerai brand is growing then you can move up to the in-house movements.
Below are some wrist shots to help you decide.

PAM000 - Base Luminor model without small seconds. Unitas movement. Solid case back.

PAM000 - Base Luminor model without small seconds. Unitas movement. Solid case back.

PAM210 - Historic Radiomir without small seconds. Unitas movement. Display case back.

PAM111 - Historic Luminor with small seconds. Unitas movement. Display case back.

Yeap, love the PAM000 very much, love the filled-lumi and the logo :)

Can PM you the price if you want to know ;)

PAM000 and PAM005 is very hard to come by in Malaysia at least..how about Singapore?

Based Luminor model includes 000 (no second), 005, 111, 112(no second), 113 (white dial), 114 (white dial), 176 (titanium), 177(titanium)..or 219 (lefty)

Based Radiomir model includes 210, 183...whatelse...not a lot for Rad model...

Personally, i will go for 000 or 005, otherwise, 111 or 112 will be good too ;) Or if you are lucky, get a 219 will be good ;)

Cheers!
scott

to be honest.. the PAM base model movement isn't that impressive if you disregard the history of Panerai,

it cost only 1/4 for similar movement instead of PAM.. (don't flame me har) ;D

contemplating now.. to get or wait till the P9000 price soften a bit..

A good start will be the base or luminor series. You can't go wrong with 000, 005, 111, 112, 210. In certain aspect, it is the closest models you can get to the original pammies worn by the Italian frogment.

The 88 and 90 are also the favourites in the PAM community. 24 is also popular.

Sandwich dials are only available in radiomirs, selected luminors such as 111 and 112, certain SE and the manufacturer models. 312 is probably the closest match if you want a (a) 1950 case (b) sandwich dial (c) date.

However, two killer pammies worth buying will be (a) 127 or 217 (b) 249. These three are highly collectable, which as also using the same base movement.

If movement is a concern, the best there is in a PAM should be the 190...JLC at the very best.

It will take you a while to appreciate the subtle differences in PAM. I have said it several times that owning a PAM is not merely owning a watch or the movement but a closely knited community. It's always subjective when it comes to pricing. The entry model for PAMs will be the base which starts at 14k. You will be lucky if you can still get discounts due to the high demand.

Hi,
I have been tru this situation before, when i was thinking to get my first PAM 2 years ago.
I was struggling, should i get a watch with an inhouse movement(rolex,JLC etc) instead of paying for a ETA based movement.
You can get a hommage with the same movement price ranging from a few hundred buck to a couple of thousand.
But then,to me when I decided to go for a PAM,not only because of the design, but the history behind the brand did influence me a lot.
I must agree with Lilpronaz, the paneristi community is very unique, owning a PAM is like a key for you to blend into the community. ;)
Furthermore,I enjoy a lot in collecting the straps as well,it's one of the fun part to own a PAM.
Just my 2 cents..

for your comparison,

PAM312 and PAM111

My suggestion is not to be so bogged down by the movement. A reworked ETA is technically not an ETA anymore. A good analogy will be a Brabus. We will never associate a Brabus to Merc although it started life as a Merc chasis. The finishing and luxurious components are far superior to a standard Merc.

The same can be said of an base ETA and a reworked ETA. If you are obsessed with in-house movement, I will recommend 233 or 270 which is really unique in execution.

i'll say buy something you like.... the look, the function, or....
buy something u can afford... if u can afford and u like all then buy all....
a tourbillon radiormir for dinner, a sub for out door, 8-10 days with date for daily.... some rare and limited/special and vintage for collection!
why not?

ETA movement no good? in house better?
dont fall into the trap.... ETA is a real work horse, stable, accurate and easy to maintain.... very easy to find parts, any watchmaker can repair, no need to wait....

but its cheap.... so ppl dont like cheap things?
not really.... pam 217, 127, 249.... all with ETA... price is soaring still...
pam itself its a legend !
any movement inside also sell....

but not saying the pam in house is no good... with richemont at the back... i think it should be ok!
i do like the p2000 and p9000 series watches....
with 1950 case, sandwich dial... not just best good looking, it has longer power reserve and better function !

I wondered what was the diffrence between Luminor, Radiomir, and the Marina. As far i know Luminor and radiomir is named after they diffrence of luminous material that they used last time.  ???

I like the design but its very big for my wrist...  :Laughing_on_floor:

eh...

Luminor and Radomir denotes the case designs/models.

Marina is only on models which have a seconds indicator.

All panerais uses the same super lume.
