Wow, I thought I was brave running down Breitling last week (hence incurring the wrath of some Breitling lovers in this forum, came after me with flame throwers). Your last sentence has just earned you the Victoria Cross, the Congressional Medial of Honour, the Knight Cross with Sword + Diamonds + Oak Leaves +++++ and our prestigious Pingat Gagah Berani all in one!!!! I hope you drive a M-1 Abram.

in terms of value, yes sub :)

but in terms of quality of the watch made, GS is really outstanding... not comparing swiss or jap, but GS watch quality is somewhere near to PP (case, not the movement) hold and feel myself, but still hard to pull a trigger...  :-\

As an owner of 4 GS, I will only comment as follows:
GS has different grades. A RM30K GS has better quality steel and finishing compared to a RM10K GS. A GS can go as high as > RM 100K.
There are Master Shop models which are sold only by GS Master Shops appointed by Seiko Japan. These are the higher end GS models where the steel quality, strap, clasp design and finishing is a level higher.  To-date I have only bought the Master Shop models which generally cost RM 20K upwards (nett).

Whilst I have seen & handled some PP, not all PPs are also finished equally.Try checking out Calatravas vs Gondolos. I do not see the point of comparison as it will only draw unqualified debates.

I can however say that besides GS, I have owned or still own watches under the following brands ;
Rolex, JLC, GO, Omega as well as some Swiss non-manufactures.
In my eyes, the finishing of the highest end GS I own, the SBGC003 is more refined than any of the Swiss/German watches I have owned or still own.

Choosing between a Rolex and a GS depends a lot on the criteria of the owner. I have said and will always say that if you eventually want to sell your watch and preserving the re-sale value is impt, look no further than a Rolex sports model.

GS will never have a re-sale value as good as Rolex. My reasons for buying a GS is solely my self-satisfaction of owning the most accurate, reliable, higher finishing and lesser people owning the same model. Of all the watches I have ever owned, I  derive the most satisfaction and joy from the SBGC003 even above that of my GO Perpetual Calendar which costs more than double but thats me coz I look beyond the brand. Not everyone is willing to do so.
Resale value has never been a factor in my watch purchases. I invest in other higher yield instruments.

I wish to add that I am in no way upset or happy with comments on GS bad or good as all of us are entitled to our own judgements and opinion. I do not own Seiko or any shares in Seiko.

However I must say that in order to make a qualified statement on any product, one must first see, handle and perhaps own on a long term basis before making 'a matter of fact' statement.

In fact the fewer people who end up with a GS makes ownership all the more special...

Pls forgive me if i offended anyone(espeacially GS fans). Seiko does produce nice movements.....i agreed. Maybe i havent had a good exeperience with a Seiko 5 (actually 2). i had a seiko5 which i had it fix twice but still spoil (not using it for extreme condition, office wear) and a Seiko 5 sports which skips 5-10 mins per month, had it calibrated but still having this problem....maybe this is the reason why it had a bad impression on me...not comparing with the high-end movements like  GS.... :Praying: :Praying: :Praying: Pls dun tear my head out.... :Praying: :Praying: :Praying:
P/S: I drive a Hyundai..... :Laughing_on_floor:

Most welcome.. just sharing my few years of GS ownership experience...

Unfortunately GS has no one to blame but itself, for not making their watches more easily available for more watch lovers to experience the ownership..

No need to apologise or sound apologetic actually. I always believe this is (or should be) a fun forum. I won't feel offended if someone attacks Rolex and GO (my favourite brands); surely some degree of free speech must be allowed. This is after all Malaysia Watch Forum and not North Korea Watch Forum. Otherwise, this forum will lack colour and humour. But I guess personal attacks (like: that 47mm Panerai looks awful on your skinny hairless wrist, or that JLG looks midget and out of place on your fat hairy wrist like that of a gorilla's.....) must always be avoided.

I concurred w enkudu. I think some seniors meant well n are fortright w their opinion. Sometimes controversy ignite an otherwise dull topic ie if it is in good spirit. A banter here n there shouldnt hurt anyone except calling each other names, i think it is no-no. Afterall as said 'it makes the earth goes round'

My wishlist: I hope the watch makers would stop launching new models for 2012, I have filled my this year quota! I am limiting myself to a total of 8, always 7 n keeping one empty slot, in case. But this year is done. Haha

Hello watch experts and fellow watch enthusiasts,

my wishlist is:
1) Patek Philippe 5146R-001 or 6000R
2) Rolex Daytona Cosmograph 116515LN

Actually was already going to hit the Daytona Cosmograph 116515LN, but alot of people i met kept advicing me at that price, don't go for rolex, my as well go slightly higher and get a PP instead, particularly the 6000R (simliar kinda colour). Got me all confused so i holstered my gun and do some research again. Sigh. never really sat down and look at PP watches before. What do you guys think?

Actually i'm going to the states next week for work for 2 weeks and sorry to hijack the thread but can anyone advice me on the retail prices (not discounted) for the Patek Philippe watches in Malaysia? I've done some research and I've already got the prices in USD (from online american websites), can i just take the price from online American websites or their shops there and multiply it by the exchange rate to get an approximate price (rough estimation)? Is this the safe way to go about it or the retail price in brick and motar shop in malaysia will defer alot from this calculation? . Otherwise if anyone got the MSRP price for the Patek Philippe 5146R-001 in Malaysia  it would help me so so much. Greatly appreciated.

All prices i'm asking is retail listed price not discounted price, hope the MOD will allow this. Thanks.

Thanks in advance for anyone taking the time to help me out. Cheers

Not an expert on any of the above watches but  I don't think the Patek are anywhere near the price of the Daytona. Both are different watches and choice would depend on you.

thanks dpkong

yes the price is far apart although the pp 6000R is somewhat closer than the 5146 according to America online prices.

how bout my conversion question? if i find the msrp USD price in america isit nornally a safe bet that the malaysian price after applying an average exchange rate would be quite similar? thanks once again

for anyone interested some helpful soul posted the latest patek msrp prices in America on the US Rolex watch forum under patek sub category

If you really want to purchase a Patek, I would suggest getting to the boutique locally and talking to the staff there. I'm sure they will happily accommodate your requests. Buying a Rolex and a Patek are two different experiences. I would buy pre-owned watches online but not a new Patek. I think prices wouldn't be very different using direct conversion from US MSRP.
