IWC v GP?
« on: February 10, 2012, 11:36:41 AM »
Hi guys...and gals.

Greetings..

New member here..and need to seek some opinion from all you sifus.

I am about to foray into premium watches and am looking for a sporty/casual looking watch to be worn afterhours. I prefer a sedated watch..which does not shout from far..hence Omegas/Panerais (sorry PAM fans...) have been dismissed.  I have done my homework(religious reading online reviews and forums) and have picked my choice (so I thought)...

This was my choice, as I have a soft spot for IWC...The IWC 3234 Ingeniur. I am about to pull the trigger until........I saw..for roughly the same amount of $$$....the Girard Perregaux Laureato Evo3 Moonphase Big Date. I have seen the IWC in flesh and it is a lovely watch..nice weight and fantastic dial. But looking at the photo's of the GP...it looks fantastic as well. I am torn between both but alas...I cant afford to pick both....hence my decision to seek the opinions from you guys..

Help pls  :-\. Pls help put me out of my misery. Any inputs from you guys would be appreciated..

p.s I never thought that I will have sleepless nite..pondering over "buying a watch"......

The poison is strong....I dont know how you guys can cope. Earn more $$$....? It does not help when we have a coll@$#t$#%.C*m putting georgeous watches for ridiculos prices.

Thanks for reading..looking forward to any comments

I would go for the Inge... but that's just me...
Try on both... you will know which one is for you.

Hi Henry,

Both are unique as to their brand.  IWC Ingenieur is one of the famous anti-magnetic watch in the 50's (along with Rolex Milgauss). The unique design with the Gerald Genta touch (just like AP RO). Only on strap if i am not wrong as can interchange with blt.

On the other hand, the GP Laureato Evo3 is a reborn of the past Laureato family in the 60's or 70's.  It will give you more feast to your eye with the complication of big date, moonphase and power reserve.  Just to share with you some years back Daniel Roth has a model of Datomax in white gold just with big date also using a gp base mvmt.  GP Evo 3 comes with an ntergrated blt will be quite heavy sometimes and unable to put on a strap.

What would you like a plain jane or heavy makeup lang lui?

Please consider do you intend to flick your coming purchase in future as pre-own value also another consideration.

But most important is tat money is in your pocket and buy something you really like and pamper yourself.

I also believe a lot of ppl can give u opinion but they don't pay for u :Laughing_on_floor:.

Thanks Kwh74,

I know where you are coming from. I dont think I intend to flip the watch. Its my first foray into premium watches so I intend to keep it (sentimental value le) unless I am broke.

The inge model which I am considering..fyi is not anti magnectic. I guess that is why it is not so popular. The model I am considering is the 3234-04 which comes with blt.(damn IWC bracelets are damn freaking exp). I prefer bracelets as its much more robust compared with straps. I am kinda careless person..worried I might spill coffee on the bracelsts.. ;D

I agree the GP has more "wow" factor..power reserve and moon phase..nice touch but practically useless. But I like the big date and the hands...and its a GP!!! Its also looks a bit like the ROO..which is way out of my budget at the moment... :-[ :-[

In respect of your plain jane or pimped up lui question...I want a elegent woman who will "sing" to me..which ..is half plain jane and half leng lui.. :D

Aiyah hard to chose....perhaps need to save more and get a ROO??? but by then 2012 is over and if predictions are to be true the world will end and I will never get to taste the premium watches... :Laughing_on_floor:

I am with Terrence on this one.
The Laureto Evo3 is really a good looker!
I tried it on some time ago, the dial is great and has some good complications.

The display back is great as well.
I think now the prices are really good in the grey market so if you can find one in good condition and price go for it.

Thanks Takashi and Terrence...for the input.

The inge also has a display back..that is why it lost its anti magnetic properties....

Looks like I have try on both and see which one "sings" to me...I wonder why watches "sing" dont they "tick"? ;D

Other than the looks any other factor that leans towards GP? I know both has in-house engines but GP has more complications. Lastly..is there any AD which can service the GP when the time comes... which is not an issue for the IWC..

I remember there was one member here who had the inge and traded it/ sold it...cant remember who..wonder if I could ask him why?

But thanks for the info guys..and you guys are really welcoming..will latyan a newbie like me... have a great weekend ahead....

Wait for a while and consider this Girard-Perregaux VINTAGE 1945 LARGE DATE MOON-PHASES just preview at SIHH last month, my pick of 2012 .

Hi Kwh74,

WOW!!!..just like a JLC.....Nice watch but its more of a dress watch. Me looking more of a casual watch. But the bigger issue is I wont be able to afford it as GP's list price are astronomical. The reason why I am contemplating the Evo3 is that ...there a big discount on it..if it was at list price......lama dah bungkus pergi main jauh jauh...rrp for the GP which I am getting is a more than 30k...and I am getting it for a bargain..(no discussion on discount here!!) :mooning:

hahah in that case... i think we know where you are intending to get the watch from.

love the details on the Laureto Evo3. Both watches does take hits if you intend to flip it later down the road. But I always reiterate that you buy to keep because you fell in love with it and did ample research and thought before pulling the trigger. both are great iconic pieces for both brands. They are so similar but yet different in each ways.

as I stated earlier..my choice would be the Evo3 because there's just so...much to admire by looking at the details in the dial alone. Don't worry about servicing... even with Richemont, it's not that "cheap and efficient" either. Call the dealer and try on both... see which one sings more to you.

BTW I tried to convince the dealer to do a swap for the Evo3 with my Pam112 but he did not bite...

Give us some wrist shots once you've pulled the trigger... all the best

Meanwhile something to turn you over to the dark side...

Yeah..

Initially I wanted the blue....on the day I put my deposit..dealer mentioned ..sold!!!!Was like up for 2 days :'(

The blue would have been a nice choice since its a rare colour..most of the time we see the black and white..

update: Taken my watch (GP moonbase).... first impression...hmm the GP is so much lighter compared with the IWC...

Will post the wrist shots soon :)

This model was on my wishlist several years ago but the price was even higher than a JLC with more or less same complications so I went for the Grande GMT instead..
nice watch.. if only the price had been lower I'd be wearing this as well..
nice classy watch...
pmed you..
