AP ROO Safari vs IWC 5004-01 Big Pilot
« on: January 01, 2012, 08:44:22 PM »
Given the chance with the following arguments, which would you go for?

Safari;
Like: Size, Look, Feel good factor, the fact that it is an AP
Worried: DD module used, service charges, chrono function seldom used, no lume, is the Safari the right model to go for in terms of the AP ROO?

IWC Big Pilot;
Like: Size, Look, First grail, 7 days PR
Worried: Low water resist

Problem with both: Fear of losing money with the purchase due to being a flipper. I am less likely to flip the BP as opposed to the Safari. Between the 2, which holds value better ? I am aware money would be lost but which one would result in a lesser loss?

Question to all: The AP is readily available whilst the BP is not yet in sight. Should i grab the opportunity and go for the Safari now or wait for a BP to show up? I know next to nothing on the 2 models so would like to get input on any unforeseen problems with these models.

Thank you any feedback.

Word of caution, my view will be bias towards the BP. Although I am a fan of ROO, I find that ROOs have too many variations. For  me, it becomes difficult to decide the right model to buy....my favourite ROO to date is Alinghi.

Value wise, BP holds it quite well. As with any watch, you must still be prepared to lose a fair bit if you decide to flip. Why should WR be a concern when you buy a pilot watch? If you want to go diving, buy a diver's watch. Any G-Shock will do the trip...relatively cheap and does what it's suppose to do.

You may not need to wait that long for a BP. Since it is a hot model, the boutique always have stock. If you want a different variant of the BP, you may want to consider 500422 which is a handsome watch. The tobacco dial is simply striking.

Unfortunately, there are no IWC boutiques near me. I would have to wait for one to arrive on this shore. In terms of WR, I'd always like one around 100m as we cannot be too careful all the time. 60m is a splash on the wrist if I am not wrong. You are right when pointing out that there are too many ROO models to buy. I would not think twice if it were the AP ROO themes black as it goes well with my Diver. As for the 5004-22, I like the black dial better.

i will go for BP.

AP ROO is nice looking watch, but due to too many models, (too many LE) i still prefer the clean looking BP.
Don't think you will wear your non diver watch to swim, right?  ;D
So don't worry about the water resistant on the BP.

My vote goes to AP Roo.
It simply shouts "look at me. I am one of the Holy Trinity." :laugh:

Now comes the next question. To buy the watch, I was thinking of trading some watches for it and topping up. How wise is this decision? The trades in question are Rolex + topup for AP / Panerai + topup for IWC.

With small wrist it is hard to wear a ROO. It is not to say BP is small. between the 2, BP sits better on a skinny wrist.
