Any interest on anti-reflective coating?
« on: December 12, 2011, 09:37:38 PM »
Hi, while searching the net for anti-reflective coating services for watch crystals, I came across a lab that provides such services.

The cost of a coating run is quite high and it would only be possible if there are at least 10 crystals to coat to share out the cost. I am trying to negotiate to get a better rate for the first run as we won't know whether the coating is to our satisfaction until we see the results of this first run.

Am wondering if there is any interest in this forum. If we can get 10 crystals, the cost per crystal will come to approx. USD45 including shipping and handling. This is just to cover costs and there are no profits to be made. The price quoted is for double-sided AR coating.

Also, as I do not have any expertise in dismantling watches, you would have to provide the crystal cleaned and ready to be coated. If there is any existing coating on the crystal, the coating must first be removed prior to re-coating.

Guess there is no interest. Does anyone know of any local watchmakers offering this service? It would definitely be more convenient to get it done locally than to send it to a lab in the US.   :Blue:

The only service provider I know in this part of the world is 2g*ek from Singapore and they are charging EUR40 for one crystal.

timenut,

I don't think it is that there is no one interested but I believe it is the hassle involved. You need to get the crystal pushed out and once coated, you will have to get it pressed install. All these can and will have an impact on the water resistance of the watch. You need to arm yourself with a good and competent watch guy.

Yah, agree that it can be quite a hassle. But if we have a reliable watchmaker that can help uninstall and install the crystal and pressure test the installation once done, it should be quite straight forward.

Honestly, I don't mind paying a watchmaker that can do all the above PLUS coat my crystal.. that would be just wonderful. I guess I am just somewhat desperate to have some of watches AR coated after seeing some of the "before" and "after" photos that are posted on the net (mainly on replica watch sites). The visual effect is really something to behold and changes the whole look of the dial!  :Dancing_banana:

Also, I guess my watches are not that expensive, thus, I am willing to take the risk..  I have a couple of Kiriums that I am just itching to have AR coated.
