« on: December 04, 2011, 07:22:37 AM »
Good day to all experts,

May I ask whether the logo is a submarine or 2 person ride on a boat?
What the logo normally called?

It is a torpedo controlled by two military diver on it.

The logo is nicknamed 'Pig'.  :)

The submariner you see on the dial is called the Siluro a Lenta Corsa (SLC) or in english, Slow Running Pig. It is generally known as 'Maiale' or Pig. The front of the SLC is actually a bomb. The attackers/ intruders or Incursori would sit in the center portion of the SLC while the back portion is the propulsion unit.

dsiewmy,

Hahaha I use to like/ love the brand a lot and have many books related to the brand and it's history. However in recent months interest in the brand have been waning. Anyway my knowledge (and collection) is nowhere near yours.

It is nicknamed PIG coz it is extremely difficult to maneuver.

Thanks for the link, makes good reading. If you want more information on the SLC, check out this book:

I Mezzi d'Assalto della Xa Flottiglia MAS 1940 - 1945 by Erminio Bagnasco and Marco Spertini, Albertelli, Parma, 1991-2005.

The three teams were:

Durand De La Penne/ Bianchi and Marceglia/ Schergat who help to sink the H.M.S. Valiant and H.M.S. Queen Elizabeth while Martellotta/ Marino sank the tanker Saratoga after they could not find the aircraft carrier they were suppose to sink. OF all these men, I believe only Mr. Bianchi is alive and just celebrated his 99th birthday last Saturday (I stand corrected on this).

The Naval engineers who came up with the idea for the SLC are Teseo Tesei and Elios Toschi.

Agreed. All the boutique edition have the same front but the case back have different engravings. Well we will have to see what Panerai does next year. More of the same or something new. Currently they have 5 different case design, the Luminor 44 mm, the Radiomir, the new PAM00372 case, the 1950 case and the Mare Nostrum.

The 'piggy' first appeared (I believe) on PAM00076 in 2002.

1941-1944 (WW II) Italian naval divers, working out of midget submarines, make use of closed-circuit scuba to place explosives under British naval and merchant ships. Later in the war the British use this technology to sink the German battleship Tirpitz.

The US called it the Midget submarines
It is nicknamed PIG coz it is extremely difficult to maneuver.

"Emilio Bianchi turned 99 years (!) on october 22nd 2011. He is the last living member of the “fab six” SLC commandos, who took part at the mission “G.A. 3? in December 1941, soon to be 70 years ago… For being co-pilot of Luigi Durant De La Penne’s SLC221 against the “HMS Valiant” in the harbour of Alexandria / Egypt, Emilio Bianchi was awarded with the italian gold medal for gallantry at war (M.O.V.M.)."

don't forget the submersible, although a luminor case, but has a different chunky bezel.

also, the pam 372 case is actually a remake of an old transitional case.
