Audemars Piguet vs Panerai
« on: October 15, 2011, 08:35:44 PM »
After some thoughts, am deciding whether i should take a plunge but am not too confident with the idea. I really like the Audemars Piguet ROO Diver. Now the only way I can obtain one is by sacrificing a few watches in my collection including a grail which is the PAM90. Only thing with higher end watches like the AP, without a shadow of a doubt, the resale vaue is not too promising in Malaysia. At least with the Panerai, it is easier to flip. I know most our members always say that second hand value should not be thought of when we purchase a watch. Still cant help but worry on that point. Whats the consensus on Audemars Piguet as a whole? Is it a worthy upgrade for a PAM in your opinion? Thank you in advance for any feedbacks.

My personal opinion is go for it!!! If you're talking about Diver vs PAM90, no doubt the AP diver win hands down! I'm also biased as my next grail will also be likely the AP diver.

I find the PAM90 dial unbalance and I do not like the cyclops and polished CG.

G.MAC,

If case you need help deciding:

Mods, remove if not appropriate.

I was in your shoes once, but have since done the necessary and 'culled' a few watches and got the Panerai that I want. I am again at a cross road as I was offered a PAM00232. To get that, I will have to sell the watches that I like as much as the Panerai. I am still out on this....

As for the AP ROO Diver, it is one of my favourite watches from AP (I only like 3, AP RO, AP RO Chrono and the ROO Diver). It is a beautiful watch, having seen it in the flesh. I cannot say if I will give up part of my Panerai watch to get the ROO Diver, so I cannot really say go for it. What I can say is, does it sings to you? More than the PAM00090?

tried it on. too large for me. and it sits very high. if it fits your wrist and you like it, then go for it.

if you have a PAM00072 you want to release, let me know...  ;)

i toyed with the AP ROOs and AP 15300 before diving into pams.

unless u have a pretty big wrist, APs are tough to wear since the case is pretty long and the new bracelets or hornbacks are tough on the sides and cannot curve as well (so does not look nice on small wrist). the XS rubber on the other hand allows wrist around 6.0~6.3" to wear them.

the diver looks nice, but if u r paying that much, why not go for a ROO ?
anyway APs generally have a good name as a manufacture and who doesn't know the ROO. but pls choose well, as only a few ROOs hold pretty good value. as the price even for 2nd hand is pretty high, generally it would be harder to sell it in malaysia should u not want it anymore. however, do look at our neighbours down south, ROOs sell well there. and hold pretty good value too. good luck with the hunt!

and guys, u cannot compare a RM76k ROO with a RM24700 PAM90. that's like asking to flip a kelisa to get a honda city. LOL

wrist size is not a problem as i have a 8 3/4 inch wrist. It still looks smallish on my wrist. bro dsiewmy, you put the finger on the right problem which is the 'right' model and the second hand value. Any recommended models i should look at?

In that case u shd go for ROO.. Try avoid rubber clad bezel.. I suggest ROO's Volcano, black dial and Panda. Just my 2 cents

It cost a bomb Once the rubber bezel disintegrate. If I not wrong the replacement cost for rubber bezel around 2k+ MYR.. You can buy alot of rubber with 2k+MYR

if u ask me, the only model worth looking at for ROO is the panda or maybe even black themes.
avoid the rubber bezel, navy, safari. look at the SG and US second hand price for a gauge u will understand.

at nearly 9" don't get the RO 15300, it will look small on ur wrist. just go for the ROO. hornbacks would look awesome on u.

look out for panda with SG-GP strap.

For me, I will go for the AP Diver 15703 as it's cheaper than the ROO chrono, slightly smaller at 42mm, and cleaner dial. Btw, I still can't accept paying the price for the ROO with the piggyback chrono module.

Thanks dennis for the clarification.

As i did quite sometime of price survey.. the AP chrono is slightly cheaper than the divers depend on years of manufacture and condition.. So AP chrono or divers for our TS here? :)

IMHO, I dont think you should sacrifice PAM to get the AP, unless you are prepare to sacrifice the forest just to get the flower, but then if you have "flipping" in mind, mean you still not sure whether it is a flower you want or still prefer remain in the forest  ;D

I am ' pruning the branches to only what i can manage'. In one word, rightsizing the collection. For now have to wait as my dealer only have the Diver and rubberclad at the moment. Still heavily interested in the Diver. Contemplating what to put in to reduce the blow.

Hello G.MAC

I am recommending you take 'the plunge' to the AP. If you do not have to sacrifice the PAM, better.

Resale value aside, the AP is a 'worthy upgrade' I think. Try it on next time with the PAM beside :-

1. A historical and somewhat iconic design.
2. Case finishing is finer and higher quality
3. Case construction is unique & one of a kind
4. High grade movement (try winding one manually - one of the smoothest around)

Since you have a wrist of over 8 inches, you must try the Offshore with the Diver together. The Offshore may look better on your wrist. I have a 7.5 inch wrist.

I am of course biased!

Congrats. I still think it is one of the best from AP. Wear it with good health.
