How to check leather strap authenticity???
« on: October 12, 2011, 12:22:15 PM »
Just wonder how to check the leather strap is authentic or not beside as per the seller claimed? I mean let's say you got it physically, beside the common method, Fire. Any other way?? I know there are many type like croc, cow, other animals, but in general...

If there are other threads already discuss this topic, please show the pointer, because I am lazy to search, find it convenient just pop the question  ;D

Yes... YB... you are right...  ;D
Smelling it works fine with cowhide / leather straps.
As for Croc ar Alligator... all I can say is once you have touched and felt what the genuine one is like, you will know...

very good question indeed. For me as a seller, i have to be honest, i never think about checking the authenticity of my leather strap when it arrived. Blindly trust my supplier. So a quick search and way to improve my QC, i would like to share this with all

The easiest and most obvious way is to look for a label indicating that the product is actually made from genuine leather. Don’t go for the one labeled «Man made product» since these will be fake for sure.

It’s always good to look at the edging of the fabric. The fake leather will look perfect and have a plastic or foam look to them. On the other hand the edges of a genuine leather product the fabric will look a bit rough and feel a bit rough too.

Touch the fabric to see whether it feels like plastic. Fake leather has that feeling and is very smoother than genuine leather.

While feeling the fabric you will notice the pores upon it.  When the fabric is real leather these pores have irregular shapes but on fake leather they look like a repeating pattern.

If you actually smell the fabric you will notice with genuine leather a strong scent which fake leather does not have.

the fastest and easiest way is to burn it with lighter....

another one...also from internet

If you want to know what leather is made from and what people use it for you have a lot to learn. First of all you might already know that leather is basically made out of cow hide. Sometimes it is also made from pig skin, alligator skin and even the skin of snakes. It can be used to make so many things like clothing, baseballs, shoes, belts, bags, and even furniture. It is strong and durable, it can be stretched and shaped any way you want. That is why leather is very famous and also more expensive then other materials.

You might be surprised to know that your baseball mit, your sneakers or even your belt and wrist watch were made from the skin of an animal. When manufacturers make things from leather they know the value of it and make things to sell them for higher prices. Many people are able to differentiate real leather from artificial leather. If you are trying to buy something make sure you can tell the difference because sometime you might run in to very good imitations.

You can tell if something is genuine leather first by the smell. Leather has a distinctive smell that many people would immediately recognize. The only way you will learn this is through experience. Once you start to purchase or be around leather a lot you will know if something is fake.

Another way you can find out if the leather is real is it's feel and texture. Most of the time leather is very soft and has an uneven texture to it. If something look at all stiff then it isn't leather. If it looks like it will tear if you bend it then you know it isn't real because leather is very flexible.

The last thing that you should notice is the threading. When something is made from genuine animal skin that means it is a high quality product. The stitching is always excellent and precise. The thread should appear to be strong. If it is an item that you wear like a jacket or shoes then it should be very comfortable. If it isn't comfortable then be suspicious.

Although most leather furniture is usually good leather you should still do your inspection because, you never know. Sometimes some sofas might look like leather but are only imitation. Once you get to know how leather looks then you will be able to identify it from a distance.

Thanks bro Nazri for the long detailed post.
I remember when I was shopping for leather shoes and I kept smelling the shoe even when the salesgirl told me it was leather... and I got this weird look...  ???
Even when shopping for furniture, there are alot of types of leather to look out for.
Now, ppl selling furniture likes to say the coverings are leather when they are in fact leather bond...
These will peel and crack after 1 year... guaranteed...
As for straps... smell it... smell it... can you smellllllll what the Rock is cooking?  :Laughing_on_floor:

Actually how true using Fire to test the leather, cause I see Pasar Malam people selling belt or wallet, they always use fire to claim their goods are leather, but I doubt so...any thoughts????

I've been a leather lover for a long time, but if you ask, its really difficult to distinguish leather from faux by the textures alone. Patent leather for one is made to feel and look like plastic. Personally, I find inspecting the edges of the material the most reliable. As for fire, I never knew how that work, but I once tried burning a piece of leather and a piece of faux leather... Both will catch fire, but the leather smells like burnt hair while the faux smells like plastic. It seems, the nose is important to identify leather... Even though the eyes and the skin are the ones that will be enjoying it
