Selling watches online
« on: October 12, 2011, 12:20:16 PM »
Hi all sifus,

Just need quick advise, especially from those who active buy and sell watches online - my first time selling.

I advertised my watch (Steinhart Proteus) for sale in WUS and someone from Singapore is interested. We have come to a deal at SG$900 but the buyer listed the following conditions:

1) Are we sharing the paypal fees? Can I pay 50% now, and 50% on receiving the watch? If yes, we can split the paypal fees easily.
2) Via which courier are you sending it to Singapore?
3) Are you able to declare it as ~S$300 for me to avoid being taxed GST?

Condition 1 and 3 is a bit of a worry for me. Anyone care to share some advise?

If it were me...

1. No, I would only ship upon full payment received. Fees is up to u... if u agree to a split, ok also.
2. Poslaju.
3. No, I would ship it fully declared and insured.

If the buyer not able to comply, then I won't sell.

carefull bro...i do a lot of internet trading, so be carefull...The best advice is

a) ALWAYS and ALWAYS and again ALWAYS send your product upon received of full payment. There is no paypal fee for buyer, only to you. (unless I am wrong) so why he bother want to share ? the fee will be impose on you when you withdraw money from paypal (unless again if i am wrong)

b) Poslaju is good, DHL is reliable but expensive, actually any courier company would do

c) Now at 900, it is quite a lot of money. To under declare would help him save up in GST (i dont know how much is in Singapore) but by under declare, u will declare lower amount for insurance and in the event if mishap, you will lose a lot. Whether or not to insure your package is depend on how confident are you with the courier service ? i think pos laju insurance is quite reasonable, but do your math, would it make sense against the risk ?

my best advice....put up your offer in MWF first, u might get buyer from malaysia, and it would make life much easier, better still if you live within close proximity of your potential client, you can easily go for COD. Save a lot of money, and secure transaction...Otherwise, cost to deliver a watch to client with pos laju within peninsular would not be more than RM 20 (depending on weight) and will save you a lot...the saving can goes to insurance. I recently send 9 watches without insurance and i guess i am lucky, it arrived the next day with no harm. But i am playing with my luck. best to get it insured....

Some online sellers will want the buyer to foot the paypal fees.
It is quite significant when the amount paid is high...
I would understand why the buyer would like to split the fees...
When I sell, I would normally factor in the 3% paypal fees in my selling price and tell them I will absorb the fees...
If they pay by wire... give them 3% discount.... everyone is happy.

guys,

Thanks for the advise. I wanted to post in MWF but I somehow I cannot due to not enough post count. Hence, I decided to sell it at WUS since the watch was a collaboration between the WUS forum and Steinhart.

Will reply to the buyer - 100% payment and declaration ....thanks again.
