To wear or not to wear?..
« on: September 26, 2011, 11:27:09 AM »
Hello guys!

I came across a common dilemma with regards to owning a nice (usually expansive) watch. When we have spent thousands of ringgits on an exquisite piece or wristwatch marvel, we want to keep it in pristine condition, right?

But then, by wearing it there bounds to be those unavoidable wear and tear like dings, scratches, leather worn etc etc. Plus heartache when it happens. :Blue: However, if we spent tens of thousands on a wristwatch and just keep for showcase at home, it sorta defeat the purpose of getting the watch, true? Like owning a Lamborghini and keeping it in a garage all the time.

So, what do you think?

Used to feel like you. However, in the end it is pointless if it is not worn. I'd buy tougher watches i.e those with 904L steel or tegimented to wear..ones that are harder to ding. Also i'd buy brushed finished watches instead of the polished ones so that scratches are less unsightly. Finally, I wear bracelet or rubber or nato so that i dont spoil the leather strap.

A watch is "wearable" art.
I wear mine whenever i feel like it and the situation permits.

There are some thread discuss about the same dilemma, but it is up to individual, wear it even with dent or ding, to mark the history of the watches, unless you plan to sell off in the future for good price, then it is different story. In any case, buy those you can effort and wear for good health, regardless of how others perceive you. In MWF, we do not share only those expensive watches, we also discuss about others. So feel free to share with us any watches you have

If you marry a beautiful girl would you be scared to "touch" her too much and risk damaging her? you would be locking yourselves behind the door and banging the whole nite long.

it's just a watch and your car may be a few times more expensive..not to mention your house is the biggest investment. are you going to just park your car in the driveway and cover your whole house in tarp to shield it from the sun and ppl's prying eyes?

it's just a watch. wear it and abuse it. your life and skin is more important... if your body can take a few bruises and scars, you watch can certainly take the same too.

My take on the subject -
1) If you like the watch very much and wanted to keep it "forever", then used it; wear it with pride irrespective of ding, scratches etc. Do not keep it locked up and just take out to admire it once a while. You can oogle such watch at the AD.
2) If you want to own a few pieces but keeping in mind of investment, then do use the watch occassionally and remember to put some tender loving care (eg. polish, wipe clean etc) and keep it in tip top condition so that you can get a good price in the pre-owned market.

Well, just my 2 cents worth of opinion.

watch as an investment? bad advice lar bro... your returns are quite minimal, might as well put it somewhere else.

buy a watch to wear and not to keep. just like cars ..do not think too much about it. it may tug your sentimental heart strings but at the end it's still a machine.

Watch are meant to be worn, otherwise discard (I meant sell off) them away, right?

no I am not a sifu of anything... investment pieces are not cheap also prices are dictated by trends and fancies. Just like art in an auction. so as per anything to do with investments...it's a "gamble"

and just because a watch is expensive it does not make it an "investment" ..try buying an Aquanaut or Nautilus and flog it off the next day... see how much are your "returns"

Even a RO Jumbo bought brand new would suffer in the "returns". Unless it's a A series Jumbo

These are after all normal production pieces. Be a "dealer" and then maybe you'll earn something.

Investment prices are few and far inbetween. You may buy a Rolex and have to own it for quite a period of time in order to see any significant returns. Break even is easy but earn money? That is hard. The ROI is insignificant. Better off buying gold bars.

Yup, agreed ...watches are not for investment purpose unless you can find very good deal or pre-owned and press the seller hard hard...like some of the buyers did to the sellers here, then hopefully use it for a while, and sell it off with the same price or slightly higher  :Laughing_on_floor:

But most of the time will be lost making, but then if you use this formula, said you lost RM500 and used for 2 yrs, just divide until the day, then you will feel much better for only spending 70 cents a day

Life is too short and complicated enough already.
Why spend time thinking about trivial things like scratches or dings on a watch?
Wear it.... proudly, and enjoy it...
Wear it in good health, don't wait till you have no health and wish you wore it and enjoy it more...

well said. in fact, i don't even keep my watches in a safe when not in use. you'll either find it on my bedside table or writing table drawer unless one of my toddlers grabbed it and tucked it somewhere else...  :HammerHead:

that being said, i dont think we should abuse the watch. Use it with care but dont be too worried if there is a hairline scratch or a miniscule ding. Abusing it would be tantamount to driving your new car against the wall for a 'natural decal'. Accidents happen but we should not intentionally cause it.

If you can afford it, how about buying 2 identical watch. one to wear another to keep in
 pristine condition.

Why? might as well keep the money. buy gold bars and wear replica.

This advice sounds to me like ..marrying Angelina Jolie.. make her stay at home and go out and pay for skanky prostitutes

Only if you can find a pair of identical twin beauties.
Then, your biggest headache is which 1 to "damage" while keeping the other in "pristine condition"!  :Laughing_on_floor:

just keep your fingers crossed that your first wife does not have any C2+2 in hand.

2) Daytona when Driving
3) GMT Master when Piloting
4) Explorer 2 when Climbing
5) G-Shock for Everything

knockers?????

pictures or they're fake!

but really, back to the topic, watches are meant to be worn. not bought for investment or to be kept in safes or for us to baby them.

don't go out of your way to damage them. take as much care when wearing them as you would with the arm they are on. watches are replaceable. hands are not.

in the end, it boils down to each individual...some prefer to wear it like it's meant to be, dings or what not, some prefer to keep them in the safe and admire them once in a while...it's their money after all, as long as they are doing what makes them happy, who are we to question? cheers
