buy from an AD and time it against the government's official time.....problems solved.

there's nothing about beginner, intermediate or expert levels here.

if you have a budget..... work around it... and check on the net about the options and then ask opinions on the pros and cons about each option.

it's kinda funny when ppl start asking.."what's a good watch for a beginner"..so i guess beginner that just learnt how to tell time would have to stick to digital...then intermediate .....analog....and then expert would be regulator and etc?

the level/skill required to tell time gets harder....

It's true, the word "beginner" here  or in this context refers to some one who know nuts about watches or his/her knowledge is very shallow. Not because he doesn't know how to tell time.

I also find it funny on " it's kinda funny when ppl start asking.."what's a good watch for a beginner"." To me whether you are a beginner or an expert is beside the point. If you think this watch is nice and you like it, then that watch is a "good" watch for you. You get a watch to satisfy your hunger for that watch, whether you are a beginner or an expert in watches.

I say just buy whichever makes you happy. if you can afford it and love pateks, good for you. If you love rollies, by all means get them. If Seikos and Casios catch your eye, then good for you. In that way, you will wear whatever you have with pride. At the end of the day, it is the personal satisfaction that you have a truly awesome piece on your hand to accompany you.

1. 1st year of collecting watches, I was influenced by quantities. At that moment, I try to collect watch for each brand. Start with Tissot, Certina, Mido, Lumino, Seiko. Not to forget designer watches. Guess, CK, MK. Fossil.

2. 3rd year, I start to know the watches type, function or movement. Again, I try to collect each function or movement. Start with date Quartz, Chronograph Quartz and solar powered watch. Diver, pilot or dress watch.  Then I learn about automatic movement. Automatic day, automatic day date, automatic chronograph follow by manual wind and mechanical alarm. At this moment, I start to look for a quality movement. I'd discover about Nivarox mainspring, Nivaflex NO mainspring, glucydur balance wheel, chronometre, incabloc and many much mechanical watches terms. So my collection shift from quantity to quality. I wear automatic watch much this day.  I had realized how much that I had waste my money and time hunting for a quartz watches sometime I had wear it only once a month. But that is my journey. Learning curve in a world  of horology. The collection shift to Longines, Tag Heuer, B&R,Oris.

3. Now, my collection had shrunk less and less. I had let go a few Quartz watches that I had rarely wear to save some cost to change the battery . I Start to aim higher. I got influenced by brand and the quality of the movement or craftsmanship. I take time to make a decision before buying any watch. I have to restrict my visit to any watch shop  :) for window shopping. I have to start saving for a better watches. Now I'm aiming for Omega, Breitling, Grand Seiko or first Rolex maybe...maybe. The journey is still long away . Wish me a luck  :D

@spacewalker

You are not alone. Me too.

I just got my first grail. Though I could have my second grail yesterday, I chose not to.

By the way, my second grail watch-GS will still be there... I don't think it will disappear anytime soon

of coz quality, u only wear one watch at once. unless u want to wear 3-5 watches in a single hand then could be different story.

Quality!

I find it very difficult for me to add pieces to my collection because of this!

Question is... How do you define quality? It is easy to say that a Rolex is of better quality than a Tissot for example but when you move higher up the ladder, things become more ambiguous...could you really say that an AP RO is worth the combined cost of a Rolex Sub, Nomos Tangente, GS GMT and perhaps a Moonwatch thrown together?  That really depends on the buyer and the word satisfaction does come to play.  No right and wrong answer here.  If you have loads of money to burn... Then can have it all lah.

Quantity with quality.

Close to impossible to find a universal watch. Generally, one will be faced with 3 types of environment
  • Rough and tumble activity
  • Daily wear
  • Formal event
One would need at least 3 watches.

Yeah if have lots of money can have it all but for an average guy like myself - quality for me would be getting the best I can without spending too much.

For example. I have 4 rolex sports and 1 patek. I can add a bunch of other pieces but I wont do that, because I can only wear one watch at a time. for me to add/switch to it has to be something which I would consider quality for myself, it does not have to be more expensive, the value has to be there though.

For my current collection if I want to switch/add it at this stage, These are the pieces I would consider quality to add/switch:
1) Add AP 15202
2) Switch Date SubC + milgauss GV for 1680 Red
3)Add Panerai 000 or 372 or IWC Big Pilot
4) Add speedmaster professional

Of course this may not be quality to others but its quality for me.
