Are you really a watch brand/maker that listens?
« on: July 18, 2011, 07:44:18 PM »
i don't understand!! this point always bothers me whenever i'm looking to buy a timepiece

why is it that high end watch brands cannot make their makers or hands luminicent? the likes of some models from Hublot, FP Journe, Harry Winston and etc (especially common with the independents)..

watch lovers can spend up to thousand of $$ on expensive watches and don't mind the inconvenience of not been able to tell the time at night?  :Startled:

Isn't it common sense to watch manufacturers that other then those fancy fushion of metals, in-house movements and the use of precious metals, it needs to tell time 24/7?  to me, watch brands that don't consider this simple need are unfit to call themselves watch makers and don't give bullshit that they're listening to their customers. regardless of the brands, how innovative they are or their rich history, if they can't allow me to tell time at night...they'll never get my $$..  :mooning:

what's your take?

I guess these haute horlogerie brands do not want the luminescent material to mar the highly polished surfaces of the markers and hands.
And I suppose most people who wear these high value fine timepieces tend to away from dark alleys lest they get "relieved" of these highly sought after instruments. In that sense they don't really need to tell time in the dark.

Just my 2 cents.

I feel your pain bro, i think one of the reasons the high end brands dont have lume is that lume will eventually crack off and since those watches suppose to last a loooooong time then when it relumes will not look as blended with the aged dial.

I for one dont mind it even those with lume wont last past 1-3hrs max, to me why bother with it?

If you really like lume so much then get Ball and have it glow all night haha.

I remember read it somewhere, someone explained the reason why some expensive watch without the Lume, it is partly due to they want to maintain the history of the watch, answer with question, did you ever see the watches grow at night during the old era?

yes it sounds logical..

probably just me harping on the need to have some sort of lume..

it's just that it's so hard to find a dress watch with some lume on them..we're not talking about the lume lume in ball/divers watches but at least a bit to be "owner friendly".

the likes of what i've now have some lume on them..to me, some thoughts are put into the design..

PP with lume on markers/hands

Grand Langematik with lume on the YG hands only

cheers

Some of the AP ROOs such as the volcano and safari are also notorious for not having any lume.

hmmm.... for some dress watch, i don't really prefer to have lume on the hands/dial... for example, my Port 7 days, i can still read time with minimum light source (in cinema for example) due to the highly polish hands that reflect the light ;)

High end sport watches are different ball game altogether leh, but, will any watch connoisseur really willing to risk wearing em to engage in contact or non-contact sport, wear it to bed or any dark alley? For ikan bilis like me, certainly will not, even if one day with the remote possibility that I might become filthy rich. ;D

Surprisingly I do know of a couple of people who do use their watches when doing their work. I know of one in the oil and gas industry who wears his Rose Gold AP ROO when he works (includes on the rig and all). Also another in the aviation industry who has his Lange when working on aircraft. Yet another who uses his SeaDweller when cooking (chef) and another who uses his DSSD while cutting and shampooing people's hair.

I always think a nice watch is a special art piece.

It comes to an extent that if the interviewee does not wear a watch to come for my interview. He/she will get a very low score from me as a first impression.

It's not about discrimination but a perception. ;D

Dress watch without any lume is fine, Rolex Datejust and my two Seiko Presage with Roman indices have no lume at all, wearing in dark occasion is also able to be read in dim light, we people actually hardly go somewhere pitch dark, even cinema is not pitch dark to my definition. Don't get me wrong, I also appreciate all my diver watch with good lume.
