Investing in Mechanical Clocks
« on: July 13, 2011, 01:42:45 PM »
Hello MWF!

I've searched the archives and I don't seem to find any thread on discussion of getting mechanical clocks.

My dad has a very old grandfather clock which he has diligently wind (uses weights) for the last 39 years - works perfectly and I don't ever recall him getting it serviced! Anyway, I want to get one for my home. May not necessary be a big one but maybe a small wall mounted/shelf/mantelpiece based unit. I have no clue at all about this branch of horology. Any experts out there that can share some thoughts about it?

The reason I got interested was when I saw this particular piece at an AD in Midvalley recently:Jaeger-LeCoultre Atmos Classique Transparente. You don't need to wind it. The change in air pressure between night and day is sufficient to provide it with the necessary energy to run indefinitely - the closest a mechanical instrument could get to be define as a perpetual machine!

Was told by the AD that they can give a big discount on the clock - only problem is the cost of servicing is very expensive as the movement is so unique that only an expert from JLC's HQ will have the tools and knowledge to do it. Nevetheless, I also interested on traditional weight based mechanical clocks. Appreciate any feedback.

JLC Atmos clock is the most innovative clock ever, IMHO.
They just need a small changes in temperture to power the movement. Of course the servicing cost is high as only JLC has the knowlege and know-how to do a good job.

The JLC Atmos is a beautiful clock. However it is very sensitive. Positioning is important and also you need to have it on a heavy flat base to prevent vibration and also for flatness. If you don't put it flat, it can 'run'.

meoramri,

Are you looking at pendulum based clock or weight based clocks? Wall clocks? If you are looking for wall clock with weights, check out the ones made in Germany, more so the Black Forest region. Brands to look for include Hones. Go for the ones with the 8 day movement.

Any of you guys invested in a mechanical clocks before?

Cuckoo clocks doesn't appeal to me though - would appreciate something that has a more contemporary design.

German clocks are expensive. However, similarly design Chinese version are also available at fraction of the cost. On an engineering perspective, due to the size, the manufacturing tolerances for the gears are not as minute those of watches. Hence, logically, assuming that good quality materials are used, the performance should be relatively similar between Chinese and German made clocks.

Zitan => what is the brand of clock that you got? at just 1-2 second lost per day, equivalent to high end Swiss movement! :shocked1:
