« on: June 16, 2011, 12:08:47 PM »
During yesterday GTG, bump into this topic, but the watch had been sold 2 days ago at US37xx, sorry Takashi, sudah jual.. :-\

Was wonder why Omega choose Snoopy instead of Garfield, or Bart Simpson or other cartoon character, what is the history behind it?? And according to Seller, this watch is popular in Asia, wonder????

Here is the photo

Omega Speedmaster played a vital role in the Apollo 13 incident.
Thus, NASA awarded the snoopy award to Omega, which is the highest honours awarded to NASA employees and contractors for outstanding achievements related to space exploration.
This limited edition was issued to commemorate the awards.

Then you have to ask NASA why don't they choose Mickey Mouse or Superman  :Laughing_on_floor:

why snoopy? in the comic strip, every night snoopy looks up to the stars. Garfield looks at food, superman saves the world, bart simpson causes havoc. The Omega Speedmaster being synonymous to space exploration adopts snoopy for this. This is what i was made to understand. Anyway, dont believe this totally as even i am not too sure about it ;D

On the contrary, I think it's a very novel idea.

Please read this excerpt from wikipedia closely, digest and understand it.

The Silver Snoopy award is a special honor awarded to NASA employees and contractors for outstanding achievements related to human flight safety or mission success.[1][2] The award certificate states that it is "In Appreciation" "For professionalism, dedication and outstanding support that greatly enhanced space flight safety and mission success."[3] The award depicts Snoopy, a character from the Peanuts comic strip created by Charles M. Schulz.

also this

Snoopy, the irreverent dog from the "Peanuts" comic strip, took time from his World War I dogfights as world-famous flying ace to become a world-famous astronaut for NASA's Apollo 10 mission.

The beagle now has a 5-foot-tall statue at Florida's Kennedy Space Center to commemorate the flight, which launched 40 years ago this month and arrived at the moon on May 21, 1969. That's when the Snoopy lunar module and the Charlie Brown command module entered lunar orbit. Apollo 10 paved the way for Apollo 11 to land men on the moon.

"It went down in his life as one of the all-time highlights of his career," said Craig Schulz, son of Charles Schulz, the famed American comic strip writer who died in 2000.

The character represents the inner child in all of us and our refusal to grow up and still keep on dreaming. That is why there was no adult representation in both visually and vocally in all Peanut comic strips and cartoon. The character is loved by all Americans and is a very part in the yarn of their popular culture.

Snoopy constantly dreams about being a WW1 fighter ace and would create and imagine dogfights with woodstock. during the height of the space euphoria in America, Snoopy was drawn looking into stars and imagining himself to be an astronaut.

Thus a friendly face was chosen to be the official mascot of NASA and what not better to name an award after an internationally known and loved figure. just like those cuddly olympic mascot.

Maybe it's time to look beyond the cute face and give a thought to what it represents.

you can actually get a snoopy dial from Ofrei and mod your Speedy for only less than 200 bucks.

although you can't get the caseback. but it is real fun and just a fraction of the cost of the real thing.
