WIS List
« on: May 24, 2011, 08:53:02 PM »
Dear forumers and sifus out there.

As my 21st boifday slowly but steadily encroaches I have been promised a new watch from the folks to add to my feeble collection. As of now I fear I have been hit by the chronograph fever. Which I fear the only suitable cure would be the procurement of a new watch. So the criteria is as follow. Water resistance (which goes without saying), self-winding automatic (I'm a sucker for all things mechanical; watches in particular), Swiss-Made (a high-end well made Japanese of German MIGHT make me think twice), and Vintage-styling (yes, that's Vintage with a capital V). All to be had for a budget of RM2000. I know I maybe fussier than my dear mother but aren't all (or most) Watch Idiot Savantes? All replies are welcome and definitely appreciated.

Thank you all.

A beggar can't be chooser  ;D
With your budget of 2k, the only watch I can think of is Tissot Couturier

And Swatch,

Recommendations don't have to be strictly as per the criteria I listed. I'm pretty much open to whatever anyone has to say on the subject such as models to look out for etc. (which don't necessarily have to be within the stated budget *hint hint*). Once again thanks for your responses.

Enticing indeed. Thanks ivanswk. Recommendations on other watch styles (dress watches, aviators and especially divers and & vintage) are welcome too. Which is why this topic subject has been changed to WIS list.

Halmiton might fit into your budget nicely.
Try check out Guinand as well, the brand is owned by ex-Sinn boss.

What do you mean by tedious?

Cant be more complicated than 1-Ask for stock availability 2-Shipping charge and final price 3-Pay 4- wait for package to arrive.

Thanks for the suggestions sifus. While I'm not partial to the Guinard brand, Steinhart does have some beautiful pieces in it's collection. Hamilton's more modern offerings don't exactly strike my fancy but I'm falling head over heels over their older military models. Right now the military style has struck a chord deep within my horological soul. Keep the responses coming people. Thanks a bunch.

Dear all, thanks a bunch for the responses. As of now I have decided to add the Tissot Visodate and a vintage Longines to my list. The Visodate can be easily found at most AD's and Tissot Boutiques but does anyone know of a reliable source for vintage watches? Longineses in particular.

Legend Diver currently out of my budget. Something that can be had for around 2000?

My opinion? save for a budget of 5k so you would get a wider choice and would not regret your purchase down the line.

buy the one that you really want and not make do with the one that you can afford now.

A Longines Legend Diver date pre-owned can probably be picked up for 5k. Personally handled one myself. Beautiful well-made watch. Too bad my wallet doesn't permit such indulgent spending (I'm still a student you see).

buy the "one" that you would appreciate and not a compromise that you would want to sell down the line to get the "one"

just like women... go after the one your heart desires and not the one that is hanging around and giving you the fringe benefits.
