What actually got you started?
« on: April 08, 2011, 12:09:30 PM »
Well, I met ck77 for coffee yesterday.
He's a nice chap...
We talked about what actually got us interested in watches and I was surprised that our stories are quite similar.

For me, during my younger days, my parents are not that well off... so a watch or a pair of branded sneakers are actually a luxury.
I remembered during my primary schooldays... my friends would flash their Swatch or G-Shocks and Baby-G together with the Nikes and Adidas and like any other kid, I wanted one as well... (peer pressure?)
So, when I asked my Dad to get me a watch, I was eyeing a Swatch... rm105 RRP during those days...
But he refused... got me an rm30 Q&Q... I swear if he's not my Dad, I'll punch him in the face.... hahaha
And when I asked for a pair of Adidas sneakers... he refused again and got me a pair of Aliph (dunno if you guys know this brand)
Needless to say... I was pissed and of course ridiculed at school...
Then I promised myself... you wait... I'd say... when I can afford it, I will buy whatever I like when I like even if it's just to satisfy my itchy butt...
Fast forward till now... I have 25 pairs of sneaker... mostly unworn and boxfresh some dating back to 1995... and 7 watches...

Just curious... what got you guys started?

So you do not enjoy watch collection, you are just venting your childhood frustration?

But you must not be too not well off, cause you can go to a school where people wear Nike and such...even until my secondary school we only can wear Bata and thats the most expensive shoe i see in school.

But off course at that time i already have my Baby-G hehe....

started with admiration of G...my parents was like yours...but I never blame them...now i have kids...i know the feeling....but sometime you cant just buy enuff for the kids...So no grudge on my parents...

I guess i always love watches ...even before my first G, i admire and have the habit to stare at people's watches even now....first thing i would notice when i look at a guy would be what wrapping his wrist...but looking at the ladies...well...i guess my eyes more attracted to what bulging at about 1.2 meter above the ground, front side....only after that i look what wrapping their wrist ...hahahhahahhahahahha :Laughing_on_floor:

I still keep my first ever watch that my dad bought for me....a digital sanyo...back then i have no idea about any PAM...nor i could imagine a watch that cost me more than rm 100....back then every single cent count...Nowadays i have a bit of collection but even that, I am very careful in what I am getting....mom and dad taught me well...dollar and cent (or rm) will always never be enough...I am grateful with all my collection nowadays....may not be fancy....be love every piece

Try putting yourself into your dad shoes at that instant of time..........

Circumstances prevail, I kept very low profile, wore the same & only plain Citizen quartz for over 15 yrs, even a few yrs after I graduated!

Now become more appreciative of finest things in life .......... started to invest in .......... oops, collect well made mechanical pieces. ;)
Yeah, actually my dad is a fine man... but he did not spoil me which come to think of it, is better for me.
Just a phase of growing up. I'm a different man though... I spoil my kids to death... but that's just me...
It's sort of like a "I did not get these things when I was young, so I will get em when I can afford them myself" kind of mentality for me.
Even when I started working, luxury timepieces or a pair of good shoes is not affordable to me.
My watches were like Q&Q (wore it until I finish form 5) --> Adidas (first 3 years working in KL) --> 25 Hours (Got a better job) --> Fossil (Itchy butt) --> Tissot (first bonus) --> Now...
The above listed one all performed their duties well over the years.
The point is, the notion of not getting what I want in my younger days got me into this "I will buy a good watch one day" and when I did... I discovered a whole lot more than "just a good watch"
Appreciating the history and movements and the romance of it all...
And then discovering online forums of like minded individuals and being hit with information overload... and the rest is history...

Got my first watch (a Casio) at age 8 which faithfully lasted me for 8 solid years before a swim at the clubhouse ruined it for good. Introduced to the horology world by a friend of mine whose uncle is a watch dealer. Over the years I learned of the many watchmakers, complications etc. Only last year, dad graciously gave me his old vintage Air-King shortly before heading off for college. I have since then bought myself a vintage Oris and a Seiko Diver SK007J. Proud to call myself a WIS.

yeah and only much later you read and found out malaysia went through economic crisis in the 70s and 80s... many people was laid off and some even beg their employer to let them stay on and work for peanuts... the most touching part is our parents never let us go to bed hungry.  i am not sure if any of us here already started working during those period.

wow ...can't even remember my first watch.

i do agree, this thread is going kinda OT. But there could be no explanation without recalling our growing up years.

but let me recall my childhood growing up in the economic bleakness of the 80's

was luckily enough to have a father who works for one of the few Chinese banks in the era. Although money was not aplenty but the benefits was good for the family. Stayed in a 2 bedroom terrace house and father drives a simple Sunny. Never had much luxury at home. Always envious of kids having the stupid Superman t-shirts with attached capes in kindergarden and also those cool pencil boxes with tons of pop-up hidden utilities/utensils.

My brother, being the first born grandchild/grandson have everything from my grandmother. For his birthday he got a Popeye watch (the one whose time telling hands are Popeye's own big guns). Was extremely envious of him and would get beaten up whenever i sneak some wrist time with it. Mom got me a cheap plastic digital watch and somehow it was never the same.

I remember those days, waterproofing was a really big deal because nothing is waterproofed! Bloody wrecked so many digital watches by just washing my hands or being out in the rain. So went through my primary school being watchless most of the time.

But I do remember buying my first watch from ivanswk's mom when i was still in blue shorts. His mom was selling some plastic digital watches and he is her promoter in school. I remember mine being a yellow watch but wrecked it couple of days later when i was washing my hands. Was too happy with it and never took it off.

I got my first Swatch when i was in primary 5 when my grandma went to London for holiday. This was the start of the good time 90's. Money was more abundant and big time AliBaba schemes were beginning. Everyone have/had a piece of the pie and not seeing the poison that would come later.

Was thrilled with it. Kind of a big deal then but I do remember a simple Swatch was only retailing for RM80-105 in departmental stores and Chinese tea and Herbal Tea in kopitiams was only 20sen and 50sen respectively. Movies was still only RM3.50 downstairs and RM5.50 upstairs

Wore that until I got into high school until the case cracked and bought myself another Swatch from my CNY money. This time it was a leather strap and as always it only lasted another few years due to it being a daily beater. Wore that for football and everything. you could just imagine the smell of the strap.

The first cool watch I ever got was a Timex DataLink 150.

http://techland.time.com/2010/07/08/great-moments-in-geek-history-the-timex-datalink-watch/

It was the height of computer geekness and was constantly stuck infront of my 486sx playing Doom, Monkey Island, Leisure Suit Larry and etc.. downloading dirty photos from IRC

The watch is really cool, you can download telephone numbers and simple notes into your watch via the infra-red sensor on the watch face. Just point the watch infront of the computer screen and using the installed software the screen would flash a series of lines like barcodes to input the data.

Requested my mom to send the watch to me from US when she remarried and migrated there. I guess out of guilt, my mom would try to give us everything. But I lost it when I got mugged in college. Sunway and Subang was really crime infested.

Bought myself a series of Swatches again after that from ..again...CNY money. Prices went up alot from then on. Got myself the Millenium Swatch edition. Destroyed the strap when i went for swimming in the sea. The salt water just ate the glue in the strap away and buying another watch makes more economical sense. Not to mention more immediate too. Ordering the strap takes month.

[link to commercial site not allowed - Mod]

After college my only sole watch was a Swatch Irony. Took me throughout my first few years of working. With a low starting pay, after paying off rent, car, allowance to dad, petrol, insurance and etc, i was left with nothing and had to ration with just RM10 a day for economy rice. This was still when V-Power was only round RM1.50 something per litre. God only knows how the fresh grads are surviving now.

The pliers was my Swatch's best friend because that was the only thing that is keeping it from falling off my wrist. The elastic metal bracelet have a tendency to give way at the lugs. So every couple of days i have to retighten the bracelet. it's just hanging on for it's dear sad life. I was just too poor to afford another watch or get another strap without starving myself.

My first auto watch was an Orient which i bought online from lelong.com.

That was the beginning for my love for mechanical watches. Moved to Singapore, got myself a better paying job and thus bleeding ever since.

As the years goes on the  watches I bought in chronological order.

Orange Monster
SKX Pepsi Diver
Seiko Sawtooth
Seiko SKA Diver - for Dad
Seiko SNA Chrono -for brother
Rolex TT Ladies DJ - for wife
PAM 112
Sinn 857s
Rolex AirKing 14000 - for wife
Rolex Sub 14060M
Wempe Pilot
Tudor Prince Chrono

Still very much modest and a long way to go... that is my story anyway

Along with collecting watches I also collect bills...

G-Shocks in the 80's with the Citizen Ana-digi in between. Graduated in 92 and worked like crazy, clocking overtime and what ever else that can make money. Once even did crazy things like clocking in on Monday morning and clocking out on Friday night. Yea, stayed in office and work and work. Bought my first proper watch, the Omega Seamaster Chrono 300M in 1996. Happy as anything until the watch died the next day. Omega replaced the watch as the movement died. Second watch was the Panerai PAM0003. And the insanity continued till this year when I 'stopped' collecting.

Nice meeting you bro

Like watches since young and like most of you, admired my classmates' Casio with data memory and calculator function. In highschool days, those Swatches and Gs are the in-thing. Can only afford pasar malam watches then. Didn't blame my parents as I know money didn't come easy.

Got my first G when I started a part-time job during college time. Forgot which model was that, was a blue G with Fox Fire wordings on the lume button. Out of curiosity, open the case back and check out the movement. Due to the stupidity, the watch was suffered water damage and total KO after few years.

Had a toy watch in kindergarten but it went bust 2 months down the road. I never had a watch in primary school due to my lack of ability to care for one. Always envied anyone who had digital watches with backlights and alarms. When i went on to secondary school, i only started to have a watch when i was in form 4. It was a Tissot. I used in well into my college years where it served me as a timekeeping instrument, a distraction(chrono function- timing how long the lecturer is talking etc) and as a knuckle-duster(metal bracelet). After that, i moved on to an Epos went i moved to KL for a short while to further my studies before splurging money on a Rolex Deepsea upon my graduation. Now I am slowly streamlining and upgrading my collection.

Hi all, am still a newbie. Unlike most of you (whom I believe are still very young) and started young. Mine only started about 5 yrs back when I was in my mid-thirties. But do like watches for a long time due to my dad's influence. He has a few watches here and there. Nothing expensive - citizen, alba, seiko, an old favre luba, some unidentified hand-me-down from my grandfather (most are frankenstein - mixed and matched from various components). Hmm... this remind me to better ask my dad for a look again. Maybe there is a gem in there. And after many many years of saving he bought himself a datejust rolex.

Somehow I got stuck with my Tag Heuer quartz for closed to 18 yrs without actually tempted to get any other watch. I was contented. It was very reliable though battered due to being a daily beater. My passion then was cars... more into italian cars - alfa and fiat. Wasted tons of money there which if they were watches,
I would hv quite and extensive collection now. Nowadays am more realistics - back to the ever reliable and good resale value Jap cars.

My first addition to the Tag was my Omega SMP Bond in 2007. From then onwards, I try to add one a year if I have the budget. Money is tighter now with the ever rising inflation and 2 kids to bleed my wallet further.

well, actually for guys, there are only a few hobbies, Watch collection is one of the hobby that most guys are into, some studies suggest that people like watches, not just 1 watch, but many of them, are the people who appreciate Craftsmanship, punctual on time (of course will hate those people always say on the way, but still in office ), well organize, and etc., :Dancing_banana:

For me, I started with stamp collection since young, then into Watch after bought the first Casio with melody, wear it day and night and it is like part of me, of course since then, everytimes go somewhere or shopping, watch shop is always in the list. So, I must say it depend on individual...

just my thoughts and sharing...
