Newbie question, AP or Rolex

Hello watch enthusiastic,

I have some newbie question as I pretty new to the watch market, and since I am not able to get any brand new iconic watch and I know I might never will from these 2 brands so that I plan to buy from grey market and I am comparing AP Royal Oak or Rolex Skydweller/Daytona which these 3 model I adore most and I can only afford one (budget u know, budget). I do hope sifu2 can give me some rational advise about model I mention. Any comment is welcome, Thanks guys !

The Rolex is reliable, robust, maybe even bulletproof for everyday and everywhere wear.

Between the Sky-Dweller and Daytona, it truly depends on your wrist size as the Daytona is smaller at 40mm and suitable for most wrists while the Sky-Dweller at 42mm will be a bit large for some people. It is also thicker compared to the Daytona.

Budget wise, the Sky-Dweller premium on the grey market is now lower and I think will go lower still.


The AP is a nice watch but it is large and the movement is also more sensitive requiring more care during use.

As you mention the budget issue, maybe you should consider the Offshore models where the grey market prices have recently gone down as well.

It was my assumption that the OP had targeted this question towards watch enthusiast and not the "investor"

While Rolex watches are easier to sell and some may hold their value better, do remember that the prices grey dealers are selling them for is not necessarily what they will pay for it when you walk in with one. Don't be surprised if you only get 60-70% of their selling price.

Watch enthusiast will tell you to buy the watch you like, not what you think is a good investment because watches are not.

My personal opinion is to go for a robust Rolex first. It’s a solid high end beater that helps you transition to higher hologory later on- with AP as a next step. You wont go wrong with Rolex as a start. All the best !

A year has passed, and I wonder if the OP has made a final decision yet. Personally, if you want a single watch that works for every occasion, I believe any Rolex model is the best choice. However, if you are selecting a watch based on the setting or social context, then an AP is the ideal pick, as it serves as a powerful symbol of status. That said, in terms of wearing comfort, a Rolex is certainly more comfortable than an AP.
