Almost got scammed out of my AP
« on: June 27, 2024, 07:42:34 AM »
This happened 2 days ago. This guy approached me on FB marketplace saying he's interested in the watch. After around 1 week of Q&A, we managed to reach an agreement. Even during Q&A on WhatsApp, I find it a little odd with his questions, etc. He also asked me 2-3 times if I'm ok with online transfer. Each time I replied if it clears immediately in my account then it should be no problem. He also said he's from Penang and would be sending his friend to check it out. If it's all good, then he'll transfer the money. I preferred to meet during the day, but he made it seem difficult so in the end we decided to meet at night. Tuesday night, closer to the agreed time he said his friend's driver is coming to pick it up. I asked if the friend's driver is going to check the watch to which he confirmed. That's a red flag already but never mind, I'll play along. Turns out that friend's driver is lalamove, later I found out the told the lalamove guy specifically not to tell me he's lalamove. The lalamove guy saw the watch and said no he won't take it, also thinks it's a scam. The scammer sent me a fake online transfer receipt from a company account and deposited a cheque in my account at the same time to make it look like it's in. But we all know that's only the floating balance, so too bad for him, it didn't work. Long story short, I made a police report and tipped the lalamove guy for his honesty.

I'm not sure if I'm allowed to disclose the details of the scammer here without any legal consequences. Otherwise I'd gladly name and shame the scammer.

Based on my experience, it is best to deal in a place that is neutral and secure i.e AP service centre or a friendly gray market shop that you are close with. As much as we would like to protect ourselves, we have to accept that the other party is also wary of us as well. Even cash-on-delivery as a dealing method is not suitable especially where the item is high-value. Best to just accept a bank transfer.
Your ONLY job in this world is to make sure that you are happy

When selling watches these days, both the buyer and seller face challenges, hence the reason grey dealers are popping up like mushrooms.

Buyer would want to know the item is genuine and probably wants to have the caseback removed to check the movement.. a secure environment to perform this as well as to perform the transaction if bringing cash. Then he/she wants to be able to walk away from the location without being followed or robbed after. Then there is that guarantee that it is not a stolen item?

Seller would want to be sure the buyer is not a conman who wants to run away with the watch or bring a bunch of friends along to rip it from your hands. Being conned by fake online transfers or floating bank balance means one is not prepared to sell online.

I'm sure we would all like to know if said person is a member of this forum. Maybe the mods would be able to share if exposure of alleged scammer is allowed.

You have made a police report.. hopefully the police do actually try to track the person down even if no crime has been committed yet in this case.

BTW, you should already have been suspicious if your watch, which is not a full set, at this asking price had actually attracted anyone..

You're welcome, hope my experience can serve as a reminder to everyone to stay extra vigilant.

Yes I usually prefer to deal during business hours, preferably at a bank. That way I'm sure money is in the bank and it's safe for me to release the watch. Always be extra careful if potential buyer insists to deal at night.

Yes of course I'm suspicious because it easier than I thought and seem too good to be true, but I prefer to explore all possibilities until I'm sure.

Unfortunately somebody got in touch with me today with the intention of warning me about the scammer because he has fallen victim. From the info that I received, it seems like a well organized operation and there are quite a lot of victims already that have been conned by this scammer.

You still haven't mentioned if the scammer is a member of this forum...

I don't think the scammer is a member of this forum. He approached the victim and I from our ads on marketplace. From what I know, there is currently an effort to track him down. I'm not going into details just yet for fear that the scammer might come across this post/forum and change his MO which will make him harder to track. When the time is right, I will update in due course.

Only accept instant funds transfer and see reflect on account, no personal cheque or bankers cheque unless cleared.
