Shopping is expensive in Malaysia?
« on: February 25, 2011, 06:35:32 AM »
Hey guys

Was reading an article on Malaysian Insider, saying that shopping is more expensive in Malaysia compared to Europe, US etc.
Wondering if this applies here?

Thanks

If comparing the ratio of salary & price of goods i would say yes.

Take watches.
If live in USA earn $3k per month and a PAM111 cost $5300.
Work in Msia with same job maybe pay rm3k but PAM111 cost rm16k here.
So means you have so save up much much much longer.

Yes.. fully agree. That is why I think can find more WIS in other countries (higher value currency compare to RM). Let not speack those far away country, just look at our neighbour..they have more WIS eventhough population is small.

but i think Malaysians are rich because the amount of ppl willing to spend 2k on a phone and also the amount of new cars on the road!

everytime i go back to Malaysia i am surprise by how little RM150 of groceries you can buy. but i still see my friends carrying iphones, partying and changing cars... must be damn rich i guess.

But if you live in USA and one of the unemployed (9%!), then you will have $0 income and PAM111 costs $5300.  Yes, per capital income in US is still high (and US is a land of wealth) but I have also read many families can only afford to eat $1 burger at fast food outlets!

The way I see the chinamen (and women) shopped in London, I may have the wrong impression that those damn Chinese are the richest in the world!   ;D   and they bought tons of Ipads and Omega!

As is the situation everywhere, i believe the rich are very rich and the poor are very poor. The only question is what is your quality of life wherever we live. Some may not even have enough to go shopping. The grass is not always greener elsewhere. My 2 cts.

I agree with you completely!
but coming back to the article I've read, its saying Malaysians are going europe, US to shop for clothings and designer bags because its cheaper, sometimes by a few grand! so Malaysians are very very wealthy...and smart!!
so was just wondering if this applies to our beloved time telling mechanism?

like the case of Takashi and me in the Rolex dealer in SF, the Milgauss was probably a grand dearer in US than in Malaysia.

Methinks there are bargains to be have everywhere. A friend's boss from S'pore came over and bought 40+k watch in KL, disposed of in S'pore for a handsome profit, and came back to KL to acquire an upgrade! Howszat.

Still can get Doc Martens in farm supplies stores in UK (Scotland) and much cheaper. Yes, it is not the latest in fashion but still DM. I remember days when the only people who use DM were people in the aviation industry because of the chemicals used around the aircraft. Now everyone. Wonder when they will in contact with oils, hydraulic fluids etc.....
