The Rolex Explorer reference 114270 was released in 2001, replacing the older 5-digit model and introducing the calibre 3130 perpetual movement to the Explorer line of sports watches. Known for its elegant style, the Explorer utilizes a simple dial set with luminous baton and Arabic hour markers and sweeping "Mercedes" hands. Lume pops against the black dial, creating an even glow for hours of highly legible reading. An all-steel design accompanies the black case with a 904L stainless steel 36mm Oyster case, smooth bezel, flat link Oyster bracelet, and Oysterlock clasp. Inspired by the adventures of Sir Edmund Hilary and Tenzing Norgay, the case is equipped with a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal and a waterproof screw-down crown, protecting the movement from water damage, high altitudes, and harsh weather, creating the perfect companion for any journey.
