1. Buy the watch that makes your heart beats faster...the one that you can't stop admiring...the one that you "syiok sendiri" when you have it on your wrist...
2. And you can afford the watch. I know affordability is subjective.

stephen chow said human with no dream is no different from salted fish!!!
Wow Chris!!! only true blue Stephen Chow fans will remember that quote...
dont tell me you are one !!!   :Laughing_on_floor:

I believed many Malaysian Chinese is his fan...
I'm one of them... I easily watch around 40 movies starred by him!!!

True fans is not judged by  how many of SC's movies watched...but by how many times they watch it repeatedly..and how much they remember all the dialogues...hahaha!!

Actually, his dialogues are not as `silly' as one may thing...it actually has deep meanings...

Anyway, back to topic.....my own stand is never spend on a watch when the $ can be used for the family.....that is why if its a gift from the missus...its a much sweeter piece...hahaha

I started this topic to convince myself for buying a PAM... Anyway, thanks for all the opinion!
I think if you still have doubt ... dont buy!  To me, watches are luxury items and should be last on your priority list.  One should get it after all the necessities are taken care of.

I totally agree luxury items should be on last priority... but I need to make a correction for my above statement, I would say I am trying to find more reasons for myself to splurge on a luxury watch and not feel so bad...

I'll tell u guys a short story later on!!!

My short "long" story:

In those days, even though I love watches, I had very with little knowledge (and cash) so my collection was very limited, and basically my watch is just a watch that I like and can afford... I had Tissot (quartz), Breitling (quartz), Casio G-Shock, etc and then comes the Tag F1 in 2008 which I considered already pricey for a watch even though things were getting a lot better for me. I was very happy with that watch as I love to watch F1 too!!! kinda cool too...hehehe!!! I still surf around looking for better watches like the omega, rolex, etc. Come to think of it, that was how it begun...

Last year, I bought a Omega Constellation for my wife and was offered a pre-owned 36mm Rolex Datejust 16234 and I was so happy to own that shiny shiny bling Rolex!!! I love that Datejust but somehow it was too small and too formal, so I was still searching for a bigger sporty watch even though I do not plan to own another expensive watch anytime soon.

So I surf around planning for my next watch, found the Omega PO Liquid metal!!! I was wow!!! The watch looks great in picture. So, when test drive with my wife but well, it didn't sit so well on my 6-inch wrist... it was nice but somehow just doesn't clicked!

One day, I went shopping and tried on the Sub and GMTIIc, well, I was impressed but I was unwilling to pay that sort of price at the time. On the same day, tried on the IWC, Breitling, and then one of the sales guy convince me to try on the PAM359. Holy sh*t!!! I was so impressed with the 44mm 1950 case and got goosebumps on the 359... I went crazy and started researching and reading more about Panerai... I started making plans on getting a PAM from then on.

The unfortunate happened!!! On 11-11-2010, my rented apartment in Shanghai was broken into. The Datejust and F1 was stolen including my wife's jewellery. It was sad and it took me some time to recover... I was very down that time so my wife gave me the green light to get a Panerai. Went to the boutique and the sales guy recommended me the PAM177 and PAM111 and put on a waiting list for a PAM366 "Fu" China special edition coz the price is still within our price budget. Luckily, I never make any haste decision so I went back and still considering my next purchase.

At one time, I was about to just get a Base version PAM as it was within my price budget, bit somehow it just doesn't feel right. I prefer the 1950 case PAMs and the choice were 312, 351 and 359. Therefore I'm still unwilling to pull the trigger until I can make up my mind and make the great price leap and feeling comfortable. When I found out there will be a 386, I tell myself "This is it!!!", this should be the one. So, I called the Boutique here and put a queue for this piece as it will probably be available by year end.

So I better start saving now as I do not want to use existing savings to buy it, I want to make my next purchase more worthwhile with effort and probably I will hugged it in my sleep and dream about it too, hahehehehahh!!!

The End!

We spend what is within our means and not just about buying watches. No point getting a personal and / or credit card loans to buy a watch. If you want to make a commitment with a bank, make sure it is a worth while investment.

I used to save up to buy expensive items. And by the time I have saved up I am not willing to let go my months of saving hence the hesitation I mentioned earlier. So now I just spend what I am comfortable with and do a worse case scenario what if I needed the cash. Can this watch turn into cash (or something useful) and how much will I lose?

My riches consist not in the extent of my possessions but in the fewness of my wants. -- J. Brotherton.

Nice story there. Thanks for sharing. My short input is to expect the pricing of the 386 to be around USD9k but be wary that for PAMs, you need to put it on the wrist to see how it is. Like the 339 looks so gorgeous in the pix but for me, when I had on on my wrist for the first time, it just didnt work for me.

What's the movement for 386? In-house or Unitas based?

I remember days when Panerai watches were around Rm10k. Sigh! This year the P.3000 will be introduced (soon) and I suspect the prices of the basic models will go up.

I've tried the 312 on my wrist and it looks great!!! So, the composite material just added the extra "uumphh" and uniqueness on it!!! By the way, I also take a fancy on those boutique SE pieces with PIG dial.. which is a classic, eg. 411, 412, 414, 419, 420 but unavailable to me!!! So far, Shanghai edition is already fully booked.

Btw, u're still waiting for your 412, right?

Yep...it's exactly the same as the 312 except using the composite material case.

Yes. I am on the list for the 412. Waiting eagerly for it as its the most affordable SE around (the boutique editions are all resonably priced vis-a-vis other SEs)

always buy the one you really want. even if it means saving months, years for it.

a few treasured pieces beats having tons of watches that does not have much wrist time.

Terrence, fully agreed with you..

Sshark, so wat u comfortable and affordable price point now for new purchase? ;D

It works fine on my iPhone 3GS. Maybe you're in a place with a bad connection and it can't maintain the connection. Try again when you're on your home Wi-Fi connection or somewhere stable. Just guessing, of course, lol.

Cheers.

My fling with the Rolex GMT.

When I started working the price of the Rolex GMT was about 2 months of my wages. Over the years, the GMT price kept pace with my pay packet. After 5 years, the price of the GMT was still 2X my monthly pay. I moved on, acquiring more affordable watches, including a relative's preowned Oyster. Along the way, got hitched and family commitments followed. Only recently got the Explorer 2 for an anniversary. The Daytona was an impulse purchase for Xmas. Got stuck in Europe by the snow last month and the joy of the season got to me.

My advice? Start saving, be disciplined about it and have a target. Start saving Jan 2011 and target Dec 2011. 2012 and the prices would have gone up again.

So as long one does not go into debt and still live a decent life(style), the quantum of price against my pay should not matter too much as I enjoy the cheapest of my low end Seiko/G-shock as much as my recently acquired Sub LV.

in 1999, i was in college, but i know friend's dad who had a Sub Date with blue and red bezel. i wanted a watch like that time. IIRC, the price was abour 11 or 12K. being in college, i can only dream of it.

in 2001, i was in uni, but i was lucky i had good summer training job and it paid really well.

i was holding cash and the sub date that time costs about 2680 pounds sterling. i remember this price very clearly because i was eyeing for it in the UK. i blew the cash i had on holidays and parts for my car.

When i came back to malaysia, i could not afford it with my low salary and can only see the prices going up yearly.

last month i managed to buy my BNIB V series Sea Dweller after looking for a few months. I just had to have it because i do not want to repeat the same mistake i did 9 or 10 years ago.

purely speculative as far as the public concern. the price is increased, when u see a more expensive price tag. ur ball example is a good example. they can planned all they want and pulled back last min. if u really "worry", get it now. for bnib, the only way is up... either less discounts or increased retail price.
