Some of these old watch brands have little/nothing to do now with the original companies (random example is Perrelet).

The answer is definitely a "yes"!

My horology philosophy is to acquire a timepiece that is an art piece and I can enjoy its beauty or technical marvelous.

Just because you see some of those old brands today, doesn't mean they're the same old brand. Most either bought the rights to use the name or are using the name as "homage".

I think it doesn't matter what age the brand is as long as you can connect with it emotionally. Ultimately watches are like art pieces to a certain extent. Therefore my answer would be yes as long as it fulfils the requirement above.

My question is, so what if it's an older brand than PP? It may not be more appealing to me than say, an Omega or Seiko. Because it's older it may not hold nor have more "prestige". One has to ask, why buy a certain watch at all? I will buy what I want to buy without regards to brand nor pedigree. Only two criterias has to be fulfilled, that I absolutely love it and at a price point which I find acceptable.

i just came across this thought of the oldest brand of watches and didnt realize that there are quite a lot of brands much older than PP. You can check it out here but i cannot stand for their credibility, nevertheless, good read: https://raymondleejewelers.net/oldest-watch-brands/

Going back, i would not buy a watch just cause of the age of it. to me, the watch should sing to you in its own appeal regardless of age and branding. however, if age is a criterion that does affect the appeal to you, then yes, age would matter.

I think brand provenance makes it a deciding factor but it is not the only deciding factor nor is it an important factor.

For me, design, value then brand provenance. In that order. It has to sing to me.

From the front and the back without opening case back. Philippe Du Bois looks better. But Philippe Du Bois dial oxidized badly, Patek Philippe dial still shinny like new.

However, once opened up the case back and movement revealed. Patek Philippe is an instant winner!

The finishing, thinness, curvy ergonomics case parts.

A special thing to note, the opening of the PP case back is so easy just a simple flip with finger nail and closing too. The closing is so crispy that you thought it is a magnet holding so tight to iron surface.

The Cellini case back is so hard to open and close.
