Dear forumers,

I am currently at the age of 32-33. Considered medium-slim size body with height ~176cm. Currently in engineering exec management position and looking for a better watch after my G-Shock(for rough use, site visiting, sport) and Ball Night Train (current daily watch). Will keep the existing watches as alternatives.

Wish to get a daily used watch for all occasion.Also as my own birthday and wedding gift (we always need some excuses). But please do not advise me to get both:)

Next target after 40s might be a submariner or JLC...

Having a dilemma between either one of the following:

1) New Longines Master Collection Retrograte Moonphase (loves it's complication, with second time zone (GMT), classy look, moon phase, white dial, value for money - high C/P for it's complication and package, see through back case, cheaper than the other 2 options, but non-luminous hands, not sure about the durability for the complicated movement with 4 x retrogrates and future maintenance issue of its movement, special ETA movement);

2) Preowned Omega Planet Ocean 8500 normal or GMT version (Loves it's brand value, Chronometer, all rounder, looks to be tough & durable, good movement, see through back case, but not so like wear it with bracelet);

3) Preowned IWC PILOTS CHRONOGRAPH (It's IWC, classy look, feel like matching my style- own thought, but looks a bit similar to my existing ball watch in terms of colour and character, ETA movement, non see through back case);

(I also attach the photos for your references)

Appreciate if you guys can share your thought and advises.Thanks

On pure looks alone, I'd go IWC. It's a chrono. And leather. Classy and tough looking at the same time. Pre-owned, its value for money. ETA movement has been a proven workhorse.

Get the Omega. Good price for a second hand. Iconic design and will last the test of time.

Wedding/birthday, I would prefer to buy a brand new watch and keep it. Longines.

Given the three options, I'd go with the Omega anytime as a daily wearer. The bracelet can be swapped out for the rubber anytime. For me, a daily wearer means it can afford to stand up to the rigours of our daily life so that also means getting wet. Leather straps do not last too long in our weather. Also as a wedding/birthday gift, I'd get something a little bit better. In fact I would get the best that i can afford. It's my wedding and birthday so I might as well splurge a little and savour the watch for years to come.

  • Success. It's a mind game.
Agree with the sifus above that the only real choice would be the... Omega Planet Ocean. It goes well with a suit and tie, and wet suit as well. And since Bond sports the PO on many of his worldly missions and lady conquests, you would know that the PO could serve the rigours of harsh outdoor adventures as well as rolling good times in bed. The PO could be a keeper over time, all pun intended. Case in point, I graduated from the 41mm Diver 300m 2500 (Die Another Day) to 45.5mm PO 600m 2500 (Quantum of Solace), then to 42mm PO 600m 2500 (Casino Royale), and now 45.5mm PO Chrono 600m 9300 and further looking at the 42mm PO 600m 8500 (Skyfall). I had Subs and SDc, but the PO stood gallantly on its own stride. I would opine that you would enjoy your time with PO.

If u r considering submariner in the 40s, then I would suggest to go IWC for ur current beater. I believe this will be a sentimental watch and you won't be flipping in the future. IWC will add more variety to u in the future. If Omega, you have 2 diver when in the 40s which design almost the same except brand.

Personally, my vote is omega. I believe a diver watch is daily beater that can be wear on all occasion without going out of style.

I also prefer brand new watch for significant event but not that Longines. I like Longines but I don't think that particular model will stand test of time. So omega / iwc >> longjnes

IWC gets my vote. Brand power far more appealing than an omega

Please take a look at the Longines Retrograde on your wrist. I give this advice based on my experience not with a Longines but with a different brand.

I found a Maurice Lacroix Double Retrograde online. Looked at the photos and fell in love with it. Size was good at 43mm, loved the double retrograde, blued screws, gold chatons on the display back. It struck every emotional nerve in what i wanted in a watch.

But big problem. Watches in photos seldom look the same on the wrist. What seemed to be a bold dial was actually a bit more subtle on the wrist and there was no excitement and some disappointment with the choice. The photos were accurate but on the wrist; the hands were slim and underwhelming and didn't stand out like I thought they would.

I still have the watch and while I still like the double retrograde functions, I seldom wear it. i do enjoy it on occasion and likely will not sell it but I don't get that warm fuzzy feeling I get wearing my others.

Please note I'm not comparing the Longines to the Maurice Lacroix, they are different watches. Just be careful of the busy dial with multiple hands. And be sure to see it on the wrist.

I noticed as I wrote this, I don't have one photo of the watch on my wrist however I have wrist shots of all my other watches. I think that makes a statement.

Best of luck on your choice.

Out of all those, my choice would be the Omega PO for its versatility and value. It won't decrease in price so much compared to Longines which will decrease by half as soon as you walk out. The IWC is also another good choice but movement wise, it is quite boring.

I'm not saying go for value as watches are a very emotional purchase. Try it out first.

But the Planet Ocean is the one I foresee will get more wrist time due to it's versatility and water resistance is a very good plus.
