Any Suggestions On Where To Engrave A Watch?
« on: December 01, 2010, 10:57:32 AM »
Hi Guys,

My girl was thinking of engraving a message on the watch that she gave me. I was wondering if there are any suggestions on where to do it, or would any watch shop to the trick?

On an unrelated note, I noticed that there seems to be a small scratch on the watch back :( I didn't take of the plastic wrapping on the watch when I first purchased it, but I did so after noticing some small brown marks on the watch (picture attached). I did manage to rub one of them off with a damp cloth, but couldn't seem to rub off the bigger mark, hopefully it isn't a scratch :/ If it's a scratch, could it be polished off? I need to be more careful inspecting stuff before I pay money in the future :/

Thanks in advance!

with my limited knowledge on this subject, if it is a scratch then it is quite impossible to polish off without erasing the engraving. unless they have a tiny polisher.

Some watch shops do offer engraving services. No harm in asking. Also you can try Central Market. As for your watch, the case back has a brushed finish. I don't think you would want to polish it.

I think most watch shops "outsource" engraving to others.

@Chrisyen: lol

I took a trip to Amcorp mall this weekend and the watch shops there suggested that I go to the Pewter shop that does engraving (though it was closed on Sunday, boo).

I do have a question, though. The watch shop (not mentioning names since I think there is a rule against it), said that they recommended me to remove the back panel of the watch and send that for engraving, since the engraving guys use laser or something, he said it could melt/spoilt certain parts in the watch if I send the whole watch for engraving and said that he's seen it happen before.

He said that once the back is opened, the gasket will need to be replaced and all. Said it'll cost like 30 bucks to open the plate, send it for engraving (not inclusive or engraving charges) and put it back with a new gasket. Is that necessary, or is he just trying to upsell me? The shop looked pro, though.

Cheers.

1. Laser engrave will heat up the case back. Case back too hot will melt the rubber gasket, oil will turn gas.... So it is better for you to just send the caseback for engraving!

2. Professional watchmaker do change the rubber caseback gasket each time. The tiny rubber only worth few cents... But the workmanship n investment on tool n shop rental cost the watchmaker alot. So it is a business to him. Unless u hv a regular watchmaker, or else every watchmaker will charge a walk in customer, so without changing the rubber they dunno how to charge u right?

I hv no problem open n screw in back my watch without changing the rubber gasket... The pressure tester can tell that!!!

@Chrisyen:

1. Ok, makes sense. Will remove caseback and engrave that separately.

2. Ok. I can accept the cost of workmanship if it's necessary to do it. It's business after all. Just wanted to make sure that it's the way things are done, lol. N00b here :p

Sounds like the method will be to pay them to remove/put back the caseback and get the engraving done on the caseback only. Will update :)

Thanks!

Ensure the watch shop remove your back case first as most of them will outsource to others, try ask empire and amcorp
