Keeping it stock or not...
« on: May 20, 2017, 08:26:27 AM »
My collection philosophy is to keep everything stock i.e. As per delivered by the AD & manufacturer. Nevertheless a lot of people like to accessorise on the bracelets/straps. Some even go to the extend of replacing the glass crystals.

The issue I find in my collection philosophy is that getting replacement parts, especially rubber straps is a chore. Replacing a broken rubber strap with aftermarket alternatives is so much quicker, (cheaper in most cases) and you be spoiled for choice.

Anyone like to share their views on this topic?

for me, i like DIY changing straps, it gives a fresh look for the watch from time to time, in case i get bored  :D

but for replacing hands, dail, bezel or crystal, it's a big no for me, because it had already change the identity of the watch

I will only change the straps. This lets me have an option to "freshen" up the watch a little. And also this gives me the opportunity to change the general character of the watch when the colour of the strap is changed. I have sports watches that come in steel bracelets that I have changed to rubber just to mix it up a little. I also have brown leather straps that I changed to black leather to make it less conspicuous and under the radar. I also have diver watches that come in steel bracelets that I have changed to rubber or nato giving it a more sporty and casual look. As to the brand of straps that I buy, I would sometimes buy the original which would sometimes be the more expensive option. And sometimes I will buy a different brand but similar in quality at 1/3 of the price. Rios leather straps are one of the brands that I like to buy. But the watch case, dial, hands, crown and crystal is something that I will never touch. If it comes in a ceramic bezel, it will stay that way. If it comes with a hardly crystal, that is how it will remain.

Due to the nature that I tend to sweat easily, a rubber strap is a must for each of my watch. I prefer the original manufacturer brand rather than third party alternatives.

However, I do keep one or two formal leather straps just for formal occasions.

I will keep the rest of the watch as it is.

From time to time, I like to change the bracelet to strap, and vice versa...
However, the watch itself will be kept as stock

What about replacing a mineral glass to sapphire crystal/domed crystal?

If there is wear or scratches on mineral or plexi glass such as speedmaster, i would consider for sapphire  glass as viable replacement. its more to the satisfaction of the wearer and probably some will consider the resale value of the watch.

Once you started on this route, then it becomes addictive. First the crystal, then the bezel insert, then the bezel, then the chapter ring, etc etc etc... It's a different kind of fun altogether. After having started on the mods for Seiko, am now toying with the idea of domed crystal on the Speedy.

Does the modders test the water ratings after changing the crystal?

Well, my watchsmith informed me that he placed importance on the case back, crown, and gasket; and any watch smith worth his salt would be able to perform the wet or dry water pressure testing. Took 'em swimming with no issues, so that should be alright then.

Changing straps does save you from the urge of getting another watch. A much cheaper alternative and it does give your watch a new dimension.
