Engrave or not to engrave...
« on: February 14, 2017, 04:40:09 PM »
Hi fellows, I need some input from you guys on engraving a rolex. I am thinking about engraving the caseback on my datejust2, and possible incoming Deepsea blue(titanium caseback, possible? bad idea?). I am curious about the impacts in short/long run. Also, where to go?

Do bear in mind that whatever watch u engrave loses 2nd hand value substantially. It personalises the watch but you might not be able to flip or sell it in the future.

Oh ya, I do aware of that, I am not flipping any of those, they are sentimental pieces for me.

Unless the owner who engrave it is a prominent person .. value will go up

Not advisable, unless it is something meaningful to u personally.

I never engrave a watch before and I'm not sure is it common to do so. If you're certain about keeping the timepiece and well engraving it will be unique but if you're unsure about it, it's really not advisable to do so especially when it is a Rolex.

Thanks for the input thus far, but again resell value is not a consideration factor here.

Seem like engraving a Rolex is not a common thing (at least in Malaysia) judging by the responses.

Lol I know it's my watch and my decision. This is a forum, hence I'm asking for opinions, final decision is still with me. Forums won't go far if everyone just tells everyone else to do whatever they like, right?

If the engraving means something to you, by all means.

At least it's much more interesting than those boring Rolex around.

It won't impact the watch mechanically.. so end of the day, it all depends on what the engraving means to you. For me, knowing that the watch means something to me is good enough.. engraving is not necessary.

I prefer no additional 'cosmetic' on my watches.

Engrave on watch just like tattoo on body.

Once it's done, please do not regret it!

Are you absolutely certain you will not ever ever sell it? If a new watch comes by and you need the funds to get that watch, would you sell your current watch?

If you are 100% unwavering certain that you will not sell those watches, and you are absolutely 100% certain that the next owner (kid, grandchild etc) will never ever sell them, then my advise is to go ahead and engrave them. Make it an heirloom.

Life is short. Have dessert first.

If you want to engrave it, go ahead.

You can always have it polished to remove the engraving (as long as it's not deep) if you decide to sell it.

As an alternate you can buy a new case back. If the case back is not engraved by Rolex (Deep Sea comes to mind) they aren't that expensive.

Hi Foong, I got it engraved at the JLC boutique at Starhill. I came up with a design motif that symbolized my marriage to my wife and they were kind enough to get the design engraved onto both our Reverso case backs. Very impressive!
