Why are display watches in advertisements and in stores usually set to about 10:10?

I thought the time should be 10:12 so that hour and minute hands form a perfect 90degree.

There is no singular reason why it is done so. Suffice to say it makes it more symmetrical.

If you check the Rolex web site, most watches have hands set at 10:10:31.

The Daytona has hands with the hour at 10, the minute hand at almost 11 and the second hand at 55.

Cellini's have the 10:10:37.

Yacht-Master II is 10:11:27.

Apple watch uses 10:09:30.

iPhone and iPad use 9:41 as it was the time in the Apple presentation when Steve Jobs unveiled the first iPhone in 2007. there have been a few other times used in advertisements but 09:41is the standard.

Timex uses 10:09:36.

Tag Heuer uses 10:10:37.

Omega tends to use 10:08:37.

And I'm sure there are many other variations.

I think this is reason,I've read about it that they actually hire a consultant to determine where the hr and min hand should be in the advertisment

It's funny that I never noticed this before, but it definitely must be so you can see the dial element as clearly as possible (including all text).

It also seems to stay out of the way on the most common chrono layouts:
